Hello, my dear Steemians, trust you are all good today. I am so excited to be participating in this contest that was organised by @ninapenda. This contest gives me the chance to share my views freely, and I really appreciate it.

According to what the title says, "if you were in charge" it means taking up a leadership position in any institution, community or country. It doesn't automatically mean having power, but it means having responsibility.

What I love most about being in charge is making decisions for those who cannot stand up for themselves, and it also means creating a safe space where people feel seen, heard and valued.

If I were to be given full authority for one year in my community or country, the first issue I would like to sort out is POVERTY.

I see poverty as one of the biggest problems that people are facing in Nigeria today. Poverty is a disease, that has affected almost every part of life.

It makes people unable to access simple basic needs like education, healthcare, housing, food and of course, security. When people struggle to survive, it becomes difficult for them to plan a future for themselves and live well.

Poverty has increased the crime rate and limits opportunities for many people in the country, especially for young people. In 2018, Nigeria was declared the poverty capital in the whole world for you to see how bad this problem has become.

I choose poverty over other issues because it's the root problem from which almost all other issues or society problems grow.
I believe that there are two types of poverty:

Personal poverty and state poverty

Personal poverty is when people are financially unable to afford their basic needs, while state poverty is when a community or country is underdeveloped and lacks basic social amenities.

Poverty is often ignored, but it's really contributing to the high rate of financial instability, insecurity, poor health care, poor housing, malnutrition, limited education, lack of access to justice, political corruption and even problems happening in families and marriages.

By sorting out poverty first, most of the other problems can be reduced at the same time. If I were to be in charge, I would focus on increasing the minimum wage, bringing more job opportunities online and offline, and introducing legal support and insurance for the poor.

Make sure there is proper healthcare for people, build care housing for people living with disabilities, and tackle bad housing.
Poverty can't be fixed at once, but taking the right steps will bring a long-lasting change.

One difficult decision I would make is introducing a new system and law on how to control and monitor how basic needs are managed in the country.

In my one year of reducing poverty in the country, this would be the hardest choice to make. This decision involves limiting some important areas like food supply, transportation, security, communication, and housing.

These areas affect everybody's daily life, and yet they are often controlled in a way that will make survival difficult for the poor.
I would either place them under communal control or allow high competition to prevent exploitation and control high prices.

The goal is for the basic needs to be accessible to everyone and affordable regardless of how much they are earning. Nobody has to suffer just because they don't earn big.

I will also make sure that no worker becomes homeless or poor after spending at least fifteen years working hard and contributing to the society. Anybody who has served the country deserves a good and peaceful life.

If I were in charge and some people disagreed with my poverty policy, I would explain my decision on why I am doing all those things I am doing, through debates, open discussions and positive talks.

I know many people disagree because they do not really understand my decision or because it does not favour their personal and selfish interests.

I will tell them to look at the bigger picture and understand that my decision is for the best for everybody, for the poor as well as the poor condition of the country.

In conclusion, if I were to be in charge for just a year, I would treat poverty like a serious crime against humans, and I would do everything in my power to reduce it so that people can live well and not struggle to survive.
