Akeelah and the bee, a 2006 movie that clearly features Akeelah Anderson, a young girl from South Los Angeles who naturally loves spelling. Despite coming from a challenging environment and always not confident about herself, she joins her school spelling bee and surprises everyone.

Dr. Larabee got interested in her and agreed to coach her. Akeelah begins to train, but along the way she faces, self-doubt, pressure and little bit of competition from other students. At a time, fear got hold on her and she almost gave up, but her family, her friend and coach kept believing in her.

Well, through hard work, belief in herself and support from others around, she continues to struggle until she got to the National spelling bee and proved her courage.

What or whose inner struggle stood out the most for you in the movie?

In Akeelah and bee, the inner struggle that stood out the most for me was that of Akeelah Anderson.

Her biggest battle was not the competition or spelling words, it is with herself. Even though she is naturally gifted, Akeelah struggled with self-doubt and fear of failure because she will always compare herself with other privileged students. She is afraid of being judged, or disappointing others and equally falling into a world she feels she doesn't belong.

There were times she considered quiting, not because she lacked knowledge but because she lacked confidence. This was her struggle, self confidence. She didn't know how to handle that part of her life. Our mindset most times become our biggest obstacle.

Her journey became more powerful when she overcomes the struggles with the help of her coach, and her family. She gradually begin to believe in herself.

Which moment showed real strength and why?

The moment that showed real strength was during the final round of the National spelling bee, Akeelah realizes that another contestant, Dylan, is struggling under pressure.

Instead of focusing on wining, Akeelah made an intentional mistake by spelling a word wrongly so that the boy (Dylan) can spell it correctly and regain his confidence, while they continue with the competition fairly. This moment was amazing because she didn't bother about the victory but she chose compassion and integrity.

This was where her strength showed because letting go of a chance to win a competition wasn't easy especially after working so hard to reach that stage. Finally, Akeelah overcomes fear and pressure showing that strength is not just about being the best, but doing the right thing even when it cost you. She becomes more self aware.

How did the character change by the end?

At the beginning of the movie, Akeelah struggles with fear, self confidence and afraid of being judged. But by the end, she becomes confident, and self-assured. She no longer run away from challenges but faces them. Now, instead of seeing herself as “not worthy,” she begins to identify her self worth.

Emotionally, Akeelah grew. She learns patience, discipline and hard work through her training. She also understands that success is not about winning but about growth. Her mindset shifts from fear to growth and that was when her winning cap was delivered.
