SLC31-W6: Movie Magic | Movies that stay with you

The movie I am discussing today is very popular in my country, Bangladesh. I have personally seen the movie many times. The name of the movie is Hazar Bachar Dhore (Through Thousand Years). The movie has taken a place in my heart due to its perfect acting and extraordinary story. It won the National Film Awards in a total of six categories, including Best Film.

Write on a movie that has never left your mind because it impacted you.

Cinema is not just a medium of entertainment; it sometimes helps us trace our roots and brings the deep reality of life before our eyes. After watching some movies, the atmosphere, songs, or a particular character keeps wandering in our minds in such a way that we cannot easily forget them. As a Bangladeshi, I have seen many movies from childhood to today, but the movie Hazar Bachar Dhore, based on the timeless novel by renowned fiction writer and filmmaker Zahir Raihan, had a deep, sad, and lasting impact on my mind.

Which scene still stays in your mind? Why?

It seems to me that every scene in this movie portrays a strangely beautiful yet brutal reality of rural Bengal. However, the scene that has left the biggest scar in my mind and continues to haunt my memory to this day is the last scene of the movie.

After Maqbul's death, when the entire homestead of Chidam Pal was submerged in the riverbed due to the severe erosion of the Pramatta River, Tuni, Montu, and the rest of the villagers left their old land, losing everything. With a handful of furniture and survival supplies, they are walking in a line in search of a new shelter, holding a chest of emptiness and uncertainty—every time I have seen this scene on screen, my chest has become heavy with an unknown cry.

The reason why this scene is etched in my mind is that it is not just a personal tragedy of Tuni or Montu; it is a brutal document of the thousand-year struggle for survival of the rural people of present-day Bengal, affected by river erosion. Zahir Raihan and the director have perfectly portrayed the way people dream of living anew despite losing everything in this last scene. The cinematography of the scene, the quiet and gloomy rural environment, and the sad melody of the background were so vivid that even after the movie ended, the viewer was left with a strange emptiness.

What message did you carry forward?

I think that the movie Hazar Bachar Dhore is not just a story; it is a living mirror of our rural society that has been going on for hundreds of years. I got some very important life-oriented and social messages from this movie, which I carry in my thoughts even today.

In my opinion, the movie highlights the superstitions, religious bigotry, and cruelty of unequal marriages in rural society and portrays the degradation of young souls. At the same time, it speaks about the repressed feelings and rights of women imprisoned within four walls, as well as the struggle to preserve the eternal existence of the Bengali nation, crushed by the scourge of river erosion and poverty, and gives a message of indomitable tolerance.

Would you recommend this movie? Why?

I would strongly recommend this movie to people from any part of the world from the bottom of my heart. This is a must-see movie, especially for those who want to see authentic Bengali cinema and the true form and psychology of Bengali rural culture.

I recommend this movie because in today's modern and mechanical era, when we are forgetting our folk culture, history, and human values, this movie reminds us where our roots are. This is not just a simple love story; it is a historical, social, and human document. The excellent direction of the movie Hazar Bachar Dhore, the extraordinary background music of Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul and the realistic acting of each character will deeply impress any viewer.

My personal Rating: 9.7/ 10

The main reason I gave this film a 9.7 rating is its extraordinary production style. It is not just a movie, it is a living history of the joys and sorrows of a thousand years of present-day Bengal captured on celluloid tape. Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul's timeless ambient music, Zahir Raihan's powerful writing and the perfect and realistic acting of each character keep the audience in a strange web of illusion till the last moment of the film. Even in today's era of artificial modernity, a film that can remind us of our roots like this is truly unique and deserves the highest praise.

Conclusion

For me, Hazar Bachar Dhore is not just a movie; it is a sigh that echoes the emotions that have been suppressed in the chests of Tuni and Montu in the homes of Bengal for thousands of years. It awakens our inner human being. When I was an SSC candidate, this novel was on our syllabus. Due to that, I watched the movie several times in addition to studying. Because I think I remember it more when I see it on screen than when I just read it. And that is why this movie is still deeply embedded in my heart.
