As always, I’ll try to nip any potential criticism in the bud right from the start—from those who might remind me to stick to the competition rules: I’m happy to disqualify myself as a precaution, because I certainly won’t be tagging other users or sharing anything on platforms where every second is too precious to waste…

Your current topic has made me pause; I actually wanted to squeeze a short and concise answer into a comment, but that wouldn’t have been appropriate. I actually think the question itself is misguided.

If I were to answer it exactly as it stands, I would simply say: everything. Or rather, nothing ;-)) Because I absolutely do nothing SOLELY for money.

Of course I go to work, and as much as I enjoy it, the job isn’t pure joy every day. Nevertheless, money alone wouldn’t be enough motivation for me to leave the house in the morning. It’s exactly the same with everything else – like all of you, I have a basic need for money, but meeting that need doesn’t directly drive me to take action. I need added value for myself personally, for my idealism, my peace of mind, my inner aesthete, or my sense of justice, contentment or self-respect.

Do you see what I mean? I’m happy to take the money I earn. And that can certainly be cash or something tangible that enriches me in some way. But it is and remains merely a kind of bonus, the topping on the cake. First and foremost, my actions must serve a goal that I consider desirable and meaningful.

Conversely, this means that the moment I am working towards such a goal, the money or the reward is only half as important.

If – generally speaking – poverty and hardship become so severe that one might find oneself compelled to cross one’s own moral boundaries for money, then there is a problem in the system, in the state. Its role is to safeguard the moral integrity of individuals and various groups. In other words: to lay the economic foundations so that a minimum level of security and provision is guaranteed in all circumstances. Among current political ideas, I would like to mention the universal basic income in this context.

If a livelihood is guaranteed for everyone, any violation of ethical and moral values becomes unforgivable. This rules out any justifying emergency, and the argument ‘I had no other choice!’ falls flat.

You’ve decided not to do certain things for money? Well done. And now take it a step further and choose the right reasons for whatever you do ;-)) Money isn’t one of them.

There is a German proverb that goes: ‘First comes food, then morality.’ I am firmly convinced that this is wrong. Morality always takes precedence over everything else, and each individual is responsible for upholding it.

Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland an den Host dieses Wettbewerbs und die geneigten Leser! Wie immer versuche ich, gleich vorab allen Gegenwind aus den vielen Segeln zu nehmen, die mich an die Einhaltung von Wettbewerbsregeln ermahnen mögen: ich disqualifiziere mich gerne vorsorglich selber, weil ich gewiß keine anderen Nutzer markiere und nichts auf Plattformen teile, wo mir jede Sekunde zu schade wäre…

Euer aktuelles Thema hat mich stutzig gemacht; ich wollte eigentlich eine kurze und knappe Antwort in einen Kommentar drücken, aber die wäre nicht passend gewesen. Ich halte nämlich die Frage an sich schon für verkehrt.

Wenn ich sie tatsächlich genau so beantworten sollte, würde ich schlicht sagen: alles. Oder eben nichts ;-)) Ich tue nämlich absolut gar nichts NUR für Geld.

Klar gehe ich arbeiten und der Job ist, so gerne ich ihn mache, nicht jeden Tag die reine Freude. Trotzdem würde mir Geld als alleinige Motivation nicht ausreichen, morgrns aus dem Haus zu gehen. Genau so sieht es auch bei allen anderen Dingen aus – ich habe, wie Ihr alle, einen Grundbedarf an Geld, aber dessen Deckung veranlaßt mich nicht direkt zu Aktivismus. Ich brauche einen Mehrwert für mich persönlich, für meinen Idealismus, meine Seelenruhe, meinen inneren Ästheten oder mein Gerechtigkeits-, Zufriedenheits- oder Selbstachtungsempfinden.

Versteht Ihr, wie ich das meine? Ich nehme das Geld gerne, das ich verdiene. Und das darf gerne Bargeld sein oder etwas Materielles, das mich in irgendeiner Form bereichert. Aber es ist und bleibt nur eine Art Bonus, ein Sahnehäubchen. In erster Linie muß meine Handlung einem aus meiner Sicht wünschenswerten und sinnvollen Ziel dienen.

Im Umkehrschluß heißt das: in dem Moment, wo ich auf so ein Ziel hin arbeite, ist das Geld oder die Belohnung nur noch halb so wichtig.

Wenn – allgemein gesprochen – Armut und Not so groß wird, daß man sich in einer Situation genötigt sehen kann, für Geld seine eigenen moralischen Grenzen zu übertreten, dann gibt es ein Problem im System, im Staat. Der ist dafür da, die moralische Integrität des Einzelnen und der verschiedenen Gruppen zu wahren. Sprich: die wirtschaftlichen Grundlagen zu schaffen, daß ein Minimum an Sicherheit und Versorgung in jedem Fall gewährleistet ist. Von den aktuellen politischen Ideen erwähne ich in diesem Zusammenhang gerne das Bedingungslose Grundeinkommen.

Wenn für jeden ein Auskommen garantiert ist, wird jede Verletzung der ethischen und moralischen Werte unverzeihlich. Damit ist ein rechtfertigender Notstand ausgeschlossen und die Argumentation „Ich hatte keine andere Wahl!“ läuft ins Leere.

Ihr entscheidet Euch, bestimmte Dinge nicht für Geld zu tun? Bravo. Und jetzt geht einen Schritt weiter und wählt die richtigen Gründe für das, was immer Ihr tut ;-)) Geld gehört nicht dazu.

Es gibt ein deutsches Sprichwort: „Erst kommt das Fressen und dann die Moral.“ Dieses halte ich aus tiefster Überzeugung für falsch. Die Moral steht immer über allem und der Wächter darüber ist jeder einzelne für sich selbst.
