Crafting a Movie Ending (Merlin) SC-S33/W4

For this contest, I picked the movie Merlin. Some of my favorite fantasy stories are about friendship, about loyalty, about sacrifice and about destiny, and this one is all of these. The story tells the tale of Merlin's years of service to Arthur and his concealment of the secret of his magic. He gambles his life several times to ensure that Arthur will become the greatest king Camelot has ever known. I loved the movie and series, but always wanted the ending to be different. Had I been able to write it again, this is how I would have finished the story.

In my version, everything goes through a transformation before the battle against Morgana. It's time to come clean, and Merlin does just that. He knows that the coming battle will determine the fate of Camelot and he can't allow himself to keep this such a large secret. So, before they ride into battle, Merlin tells Arthur that he has magic and that he has been using it for years to protect him and the kingdom.

In the beginning, Arthur is taken aback. He is hurt and betrayed, because the person he trusted most has kept such an important secret from him. It brings back memories to Arthur of all the years they shared together, and he starts to ask himself, what else could Merlin have concealed? Magic has always been something he was taught to fear, and now he faces the ups and downs of anger and disappointment.

Then Merlin tells all. He explains that he never told Arthur a lie, in order to deceive him. Instead, he concealed his powers, doing so in the interest of protecting Arthur, Camelot and the destiny both of them were born to fulfill. He tells Arthur of how he has saved him from harm, fought enemies who lurked in the dark and even defended innocents to no one's credit. Arthur asks Merlin what was the number one reason for his doing everything he did.Arthur asks Merlin what was the reason for doing all of the things he did.

While Arthur is listening, he gets some idea of what's happening. He remembers Merlin's kindness, courage and willingness to sacrifice himself over and over. He comes to understand that the best friend he's ever had was next to him the whole time. Arthur forgives Merlin, despite rejecting him. He thanks him for never giving up on him, and asks Merlin to stop hiding. For the first time, Arthur tells Merlin to fight openly by his side as his trusted friend.

They ride together to the final fight against Morgana. This time Merlin doesn't conceal his powers. The soldiers of Camelot see his amazing magic as he fends off attacks, mends wounds, and is by Arthur's side when he is in danger. Arthur's bravery and Merlin's powerful magic make them an unstoppable team. They go toe-to-toe with each other and trust in each other's abilities.

Eventually they defeat Morgana, and make a surprising decision! Merlin doesn't kill her, but he clears away the black magic which has been haunting her for years. With that darkness gone, Morgana is able to see just how much pain and destruction she has caused. She sobs and confesses her wrongs. She wants to be forgiven not because she wants to save herself from punishment, but because she wants to have to repent of all that she has done.

He promises to spare her life, but with conditions that she must take responsibility for forgiveness. Morgana decides to devote the rest of her life to the reconstruction of the villages and houses she and her family destroyed during the war. She also employs what little knowledge she has to help save Camelot rather than destroy it. Her choice is a strong reminder that if one will take responsibility, one can change.

Once peace comes to Camelot, Arthur implements new laws. There's no longer a taboo on magic due to fear. Rather it is carefully directed and used for good purposes: healing the sick, protecting the kingdom, assisting farmers, and enhancing the lives of the ordinary. The bad use of magic is met with punishment, while the good use of magic is met with respective citizenship.

The king is now appointed the Royal Court's Sorcerer, Merlin, and his most trusted advisor. No longer living in fear of discovery, he doesn't have to pretend to be something else. His people, the people of Camelot, see him for the first time as a hero who he has always been. They honor his years of sacrifice and he is given the respect he richly deserves.

The story ends several years later. Nowadays Camelot is a peaceful and prosperous kingdom, where the magic users coexist with the mortals in good harmony. Children are raised with safety, families are safe, and the kingdom grows mightier than ever before. Arthur is remembered as the greatest king because he was willing to overturn what he already believed and bring people together, rather than fear tearing them apart. Merlin is standing beside him, and is smiling proudly as he watches the kingdom come into being.

I think it's a much better ending; the story is entirely about Arthur and Merlin's friendship. I believe they should have ended up happily together after all they had been through together, rather than dying apart. When Arthur takes up Merlin's magic, he demonstrates how much he has developed as a leader. He teaches him to look at the heart and not power. Also, I love the concept of forgiving Morgana so that she can repent as it proves that sometimes giving someone a chance to repent is more healing than revenge. Overall, this conclusion gives the audience hope, peace and they feel that all of Merlin's sacrifices were really worth it.
