INTRODUCTION

The soil would always remain an indispensable resources or assets that farmers would ever have. Soil is indispensable to farmers because it serves as a support system to plant growth, ensuring the provision of nutrients for crops, reserves water transportation of nutrients, and forms the base for various agricultural practices.

The lack of a healthy soil would make farmers not to produce healthy crops and adequate food and the environment may suffer from erosion, Food production. To this effect, soil could be damaged or destroyed when improper farming practices are done Soil could also get damaged by losing its fertility or by floods. Some other factors that could destroy the soil includes applying too much chemicals in the soil, excessive grazing. These factors mentioned forms the necessity of making efforts towards conserving the the soil, making this topic of soil conservation important.

What does soil conservation mean?

Soil conservation involves the practice geared towards enhancing the soil fertility, the management and protection for the purpose making it fertile and good for farming practices; environmental needs such as building construction. It talks about how the soil could be maintained, avoiding or preventing erosion from washing away the soil and its nutrients. In the long run, soil conservation would help in making the soil reach in nutrients and healthy enough for productive farming. This is the essence of soil conservation.

How the soil could be conserved

There are different means or ways the soil could conserved They include but, not limited to the following:

  • Preventing waterlogging
  • Practicing crop rotation
  • Prevention of of over grazing on farmlands
  • Using organic manure to enhance soil fertility
  • Mulching also helps to conserve the soil
  • Minimizing the tendency of too much ploughing on farmlands
  • Practicing crop rotation also helps to preserve the soil

These are the various means by which the soil could be conserved.

Why soil conservation is necessary
Soil conservation is necessary for the following reasons::

  • To help in ensuring food security
  • To guard against soil erosion
  • To reserve water in the soil
  • To minimize excessive flooding
  • In boosting the fertility of the soil
  • It could also boost crop yield
CONCLUSION

It is very important to take actions towards conserving the soil for both agricultural reasons and that of protecting our environment. The soil remains valuable assets to farmers and non farmers alike and so we must make serious effort to avoid degrading the soil and prevent erosion from destroying it.

To help in conserving the soil, we must have to actions as highlighted above. When we practice them, we could be sure to have a fertile and healthy soil that would be producing enough enough food at lower costs or prices at the long run.
