SLC-S31/W4-“Creative Interpretation| The Object -“A Broken Clock”
The clock was in perfect condition and everyone at home was making use of it for the time which my grandparents always looked at the clock to know if it was time for us to eat, go to school, church, etc.
It wasn't put in the house for fancy it was for five purposes knowing time and how each day is moving. We all like to look at the clock which whenever it is 12:000 noon it will ring a bell. Anyone who visited us didn't ask the time or check his or her phone because the clock was placed in a good position where it could be seen in the sitting room.
Everything changed during festive periods when my elder sister returned home with her children to spend the Christmas celebration at home. Her son whose name is Mike is a see and touch some and a stubborn boy who wants to play with anything that looks so fine.
One day Mike and his sister were left in the sitting room to eat and play when Mike suddenly broke the clock. Mike has been trying to touch the clock from here, where it was placed but always gets resisted from getting close to the clock.
When he noticed the absence of everyone in the sitting room Mike quickly rushed and climbed on the chair trying to remove the clock so he could see what was actually inside it. As he tried to do that the clock fell and got broken. My grandmother noticed the sound and quickly went to the sitting room to see what had fallen over and behold she saw her lovely clock on the floor.
As she carried the clock from the floor and saw the damage she slapped Mike out of annoyance so he could not think of playing with anything that was still useful in the house. It was just the screen of the clock that got broken and the clock didn't stop working.
What does the broken clock symbolize in your work?
The broken clock symbolises time in my work. It is what time my grandparents usually look at before telling us what we are to do next. Also, it symbolises the object that Mike admires the most in the sitting room.
Is it a story of loss, hope, regret, or second chances?
It is a story of regret which my grandmother regretted, why she left Mike and his sister in the sitting room alone to play. Also, she regretted her action towards Mike after slapping him.
What lesson does your interpretation carry?
The lesson my interpretation carries is that children shouldn't be left alone in an environment or place where there is something we are securing or protecting from being spoiled. When a child is left alone the place will get scattered which is the lesson here: parents should be closer to their children.
