Pick and Write [Agricultural Word]👉#17
I used to admire the looks of terraced fields, only to find out the truth about them later. And it completely shifted my opinion about the whole thing.

Land suitable for agriculture becomes scarce, but people will always have to eat. This is when our ancestors decided to take the path many of us would consider now, that is to make their own land.
Terraces help growing crops on almost vertical slopes, which might seem impossible otherwise. The water is stopped from sliding down the slopes, meaning that the plants get the nutrition and water and so can survive.
If I tell you this it sounds very logical and simple but it is not.
Building a terrace requires an insane amount of effort and money, which means that it cannot be done in a single day and those walls of the fields need maintenance throughout the year because if one of them falls down, not only will that ruin this season but cause some major disasters like mudslides. That is how much people risk to be able to feed themselves.
But there is the reason why people keep doing it. There are entire communities situated on steep terrain that do not have any flat areas around them. Terraces are no advanced and cool agricultural methods for them but the only possibility they have to survive and plant something. Remove it and nothing happens since the mountain is not going to feed anyone anymore.
This is something about it I was confused about with why, when I tried to understand it. Instead of seeing an ancient construction that looked like it was made thousands of years ago, I failed to understand why it existed there. People have chosen terraces to be able to feed themselves.
Terraces are as old as we are, and by we I mean civilization among us. Ancient rice paddy terraces in Asia, potatoes and corns grown in the Andes Mountains no matter which culture it is or when they were built, terraces are still today the same solution to the same problems. Everything that people have and need to feed themselves is taken away by gravity at some point, which is why it has to be stopped somehow. So they build a field and grow crops.
