How I Increased the Flesh and Market Value of My Broilers Using Palm Oil and Power Oil
Hello great farmers and members of Agro Steemians.
One challenge I faced on my poultry farm was getting my broilers to add enough flesh and look attractive before market time. Feed alone was not giving me the kind of body weight I wanted, so I decided to try adding oil in a controlled way.
Today, I want to share what worked for me.
My Practical Experience
On my poultry farm here in Nigeria, I noticed my broilers looked fuller, smoother, and more active after I started adding a small quantity of palm oil to their finisher feed about twice weekly.
After about 1–2 weeks, I began to see visible improvement in their body weight and general appearance. They became more marketable, which is very important when selling.
Why Add Oil to Broiler Feed?
Oil contains energy and helps birds to:
- Gain weight faster
- Improve body flesh and fat cover
- Make feed more palatable
- Reduce feed dustiness
- Supply extra calories for growth
Types of Oil I Use
1. Palm Oil
Palm oil is common, affordable, and easy to get. It also gives the feed a rich color.
2. Power Oil
Power oil (vegetable oil) provides concentrated energy and supports weight gain.
How I Constitute the Oil in Feed
For 25kg of broiler finisher feed, I use:
- 150ml Palm Oil
- 100ml Power Oil
I first mix the oils together, then gradually sprinkle the mixture onto the feed while turning it continuously to ensure even distribution.
How Often I Use It
- I apply it 3 to 4 times weekly
- Only for broilers from 4 weeks old upward
- I always provide clean water
- I combine it with good quality feed
Important Precautions
- I avoid adding too much oil to prevent feed spoilage
- I use only fresh oil
- I store feed in a dry place
- I monitor my birds daily
Result on My Farm
From my personal observation, this method helped my broilers:
- Look fuller and healthier
- Gain better body weight
- Become more attractive in the market
Conclusion
Palm oil and power oil can be useful supplements when used moderately in broiler feed. However, good management, proper feeding, clean water, and vaccination remain the foundation of successful poultry farming.
Thank you for reading my post.
