Moruya Town in NSW Australia

I could not stop myself from participating in a travel blog so I come with my story fram by fram. You will find all your answers in my post even if not in a traditional way! So this was Moruya Town in NSW Australia I visited in October, 2025 which will remain a memory until I visit it again.

Where is this place located, and when did you visit it?

I still get a smile every time I think about our October trip to Moruya. We’d driven in with the simple ambition of slowing down for a few days, and the town, with its quiet river, friendly streets, and a coastline that seems content to linger in the mind delivered exactly that.

By the way Moruya is a riverside town on the NSW South Coast in Australia along the Princes Highway at the estuary of the Moruya River, approximately 180 kilometres from our house in Canberra that took us a little less than 2 hours to reach.

Hotel Hive, Moruya

We checked into Hotel Hive on a golden late October 2025 afternoon, luggage in tow, and felt the immediate ease that only a place with good hospitality can offer. Hotel Hive greeted us with a message that your keys are in the front desk which you can open with the password on my phone.

That was a friendly reception and a bright, modern lobby that somehow felt strange for I had never experienced that even if I have traveled from small-town to big metros. But as per the Australian system the staff gets off on weekends.

Room with Kitchen

But our rooms had clean lines, big windows, and enough natural light felt like settling in rather than just dropping bags in the cupboards. The kids pressed their time to check for candys and other edables available on the table and in the adjoining kitchenet. The fridge was full of beers and cold drinks. The coffee and teabags lined up on the kitchen shelf so we spent an hour or so. After a quick refresh, we set out to find Shelly Beach a few km away from our hotel.

Why is this place meaningful or memorable to you?

My daughter planned it as she felt the October sea in Australia, was warming toward summer, you know the Australian summer begins in November so it still carried a bracing wind that sharpened our senses. Although we arrived just as the sun climbed higher at around 2 in the noon and the sand was still cool beneath our feet. The beach stretched away in soft curves, framed by rugged headlands that promised quiet coves if you walked far enough.

My kids were off like little explorers, sprinting, sand flying, delighted by the discovery of every shell and rock with a story to tell.

We spent hours there without really noticing the time. We walked along the water’s edge, letting the tide lap at my ankles, while my family watched the kids construct an impressively ambitious sandcastle. I could see a group of local surfers on the horizon, they walked past us as we had settled on our folding chairs kids enjoying and I was just shooting using my phone.

Walking on the beach

We felt hungry so took our lunch and found a place between splashing in the shallows and finding a shady patch under a dune, we paused for a picnic that we carried the sandwiches, fresh fruit, and the few thermos of coffee that tastes better outdoors.

What special experience or emotional moment is connected to this place?

One of my favorite moments happened without any fanfare as we were sitting on a driftwood log, It’s rare in daily life for everything to line up like that, no project work, no emails, no schedules, just the soft sound of waves and the easy conversation that leaves stress behind. The kids found a tide pool full of tiny sea creatures and delighted in the tiny ecosystem they could study with their hands.

Back at Hotel Hive that evening, we enjoyed a casual dinner nearby in an Indian restaurant run by Muslim family and then walked back to hotel as twilight settled. Our room felt like a little island of calm when we returned, clean sheets, soft lighting, and that satisfying sense of being just a short walk from everything we’d enjoyed all day.

We didn't want to leave but finally as it was getting dark.

Before we left, we took a slow drive around the surrounding area, especially the park watching the pastoral landscapes and locals walking their dogs that sure makes the region both peaceful and honest.

The trip was short, only a weekend by some standards, but it packed the kind of uncomplicated joy that lingers long after you unpack the suitcase. But we still had a surprise waiting for us as my daughter had plan to visit Malua Bay just a few km off the way back home.

We paused at Malua Bay on the way back, and those eight hours felt like a charming interlude between travel and home. I remember stepping out under a sky so clear it made the colors sharpen.

The ocean seemed like bright, blue and the sand warm underfoot. We found a shady spot near the headland and settled in with a simple picnic, letting the steady rhythm of the waves dictate the pace of our conversation.

The kids were immediately drawn to the swings scattered right at the entrance, my wife felt like she was flying in the air.

How do your photographs help tell this story?

I was as usual crouching to inspect with my single-minded joy that only children seem to carry with them everywhere. I walked the shoreline exploring breathing in that unmistakable salty air and watching the small groups of locals chatting nearby; their easy friendliness made the place feel instantly familiar, like a community that had been waiting quietly for its next visitor.

The afternoon light had turned the bay golden, and I took turns watching the shallows and cold at first, then I watched a few paddleboarders glide across the smoother water beyond the breakers, and I snapped a handful of photos, aiming to capture the way the sun hit the waves.

Lunch was planned there but we couldn't find any thing vegetarian so the kids helped themselves with chicken burgers but we used the leftover bananas, mandarins and chips from a nearby takeaway.

Malua Bay

Before we drove off, we climbed a short path to the lookout. From there the coastline unfurled, I felt that familiar travel hush, the urge to carry this view with me. Those eight hours in Malua Bay were small by the trip’s measure but generous in feeling an unhurried pause that held the same gentle clarity as the rest of our weekend by the sea.

If someone else visited this place, what message or feeling would you hope they experience?

I have mentioned it in my entire story that my daughter and her husband and her 2 kids, my wife were on this trip. Now as I am sitting here and scribing these few lines, a small ritual that helps me lock in travel memories, the sound of the waves, the children's laughter, the welcoming ease of Hotel Hive. Fortunately I have most of the photos from that trip which I can share with you all.

Now you have asked me to write a memorable trip so I feel that Moruya weekend reminds me how powerful a simple, well-spent few days can be. We returned home by our new Tesla and sun on our faces, but more important was the refreshed feeling, the quiet, steady kind and that only a peaceful seaside escape can give.

Would I go back? Absolutely. The beach is patient, and I know it will be waiting with the same calm stretch of sand and sky that made that October trip feel like a gentle, much-needed reset. By the way, I am going back to Canberra in December so another trip to Moruya is on the cards. Watching their curiosity reminded me why travel is as much about slowing down as it is about seeing new places.

Good post. Your writing and experience have beautifully captured the idea that Moruya, just a couple of hours’ drive from Canberra, could be such a wonderful weekend destination. Reading the entire post, I felt like I was on a quiet, peaceful, and stress-free family trip. It was great to experience the modern digital check-in experience and adapt to the Australian system of staff being off on weekends. But the real beauty of your trip was revealed in the simple moments at Shelly Beach and Malua Bay. Leaving behind the daily hectic schedule, emails, or work pressure, just sitting on a log listening to the sound of the waves and the joy of the kids discovering the little ecosystem (tide pool) created by the tide water—these are the little things that actually make a trip a long-lasting memory. I think this short but meaningful family trip in the newly purchased Tesla car gave you all a great refreshment from boredom. Anyway, when you return to Canberra in December, may your next trip to Moruya be even more wonderful. 🙂

The tide pool is definitely going to be one of those moments the children can remember for many years. I think it was what would make the whole weekend more special for the whole family.
