SLC-S33/W3 | Beyond the Map : Then & Now
Assalamu Alaikum,
I hope everyone in the Story On Steem community is doing well by the grace of Almighty Allah.
Today, I am excited to participate in SLC-S33/W3 | Beyond the Map: Then & Now. For this week's challenge, I would like to share the story of a historical mosque from my region that is widely known as the Balia Jinn Mosque.
I grew up listening to fascinating stories about this mosque. During my childhood, it was surrounded by dense trees and had a mysterious atmosphere that made it feel almost magical. Over the years, however, the site has been carefully restored and transformed into a beautiful historical landmark while preserving its original architectural character.
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the mosque again and perform Maghrib prayer there. It was a meaningful experience that reminded me of how much this place has changed while still preserving its rich history. Today, I would like to share both its past and present with you.

1. Where is this place located, how can visitors reach it, and when did you visit it?
The Jinn Mosque is located in Balia Village under Bhulli Police Station in Thakurgaon District, Bangladesh.
Visitors can easily reach the mosque from Thakurgaon town by motorcycle, auto-rickshaw, private car, or any local transport. The road is in good condition, making the journey comfortable.
I visited the mosque in the evening during Maghrib prayer. After offering my prayer, I spent some time exploring the mosque and observing its architecture and peaceful surroundings.

2. What is the history of this place, and why is it important to your town or city?
For generations, local people have referred to this place as the Balia Jinn Mosque because of an old folk tale.
According to the story, a group of jinn began building the mosque during a single night. However, when an elderly woman accidentally saw them at work, they immediately stopped construction and disappeared, leaving the mosque unfinished. For many years, people believed that the incomplete roof was evidence of this mysterious event.
During my recent visit, I learned from the official information board that this story is only a local legend.
Historical records show that the mosque was restored through the initiative of Alhaj Shafiunnahar Khatun, daughter of Ali Chowdhury of the Balia Chowdhury family. Thanks to her efforts, this neglected historical mosque was carefully renovated while preserving its original heritage.
Today, the mosque represents not only a place of worship but also an important part of our local history, culture, and architectural heritage.

3. How has this place changed over the years, or what evidence of its past can still be seen today?
This question perfectly reflects the theme of this week's challenge.
When I first visited the mosque as a child, the entire area looked completely different. Large trees, bushes, and thick vegetation surrounded the mosque. Moss covered many parts of the walls, several sections were damaged, and the atmosphere felt quiet and mysterious.
Today, the transformation is remarkable.
The entire area has been beautifully renovated with paved walkways, proper lighting, landscaping, and regular maintenance. The environment is now clean, peaceful, and welcoming to visitors.
What impressed me the most is that the restoration did not erase its historical identity. The original brickwork, decorative arches, and traditional architectural details have been carefully preserved, allowing visitors to appreciate both its history and its beauty.

4. What can visitors experience or learn by visiting this place today?
Today, visitors can enjoy a unique combination of history, Islamic heritage, and traditional architecture.
During my visit, I performed Maghrib prayer, which made the experience even more meaningful. After the prayer, I walked around the mosque and admired its beautiful brickwork, elegant arches, and detailed craftsmanship.
The mosque is especially lively during Eid, when many visitors come with their families. Small local vendors also set up temporary stalls in the afternoon, making the area more vibrant.
A visit here offers an opportunity to appreciate historical architecture, experience a peaceful spiritual environment, and learn the true history behind one of the region's most famous local legends.

5. Why do you think this place should be preserved and remembered for future generations?
I believe that preserving historical sites is one of the best ways to protect our cultural identity.
If this mosque had not been restored, it might have gradually disappeared over time. Fortunately, the restoration has allowed future generations to experience both its historical importance and architectural beauty.
Local legends like the story of the jinn are valuable parts of our culture, but it is equally important to preserve authentic historical information. This mosque teaches us that history and folklore can exist side by side, helping us better understand our past.
For these reasons, I believe the Jinn Mosque deserves continued preservation and recognition.
Video
I have also recorded a 45–60 second video showing the exterior of the mosque, its beautiful lighting, architectural details, and the peaceful surroundings so viewers can experience the atmosphere more realistically.
My Personal Experience
Visiting the Jinn Mosque was a memorable experience for me. Since childhood, I had heard countless stories about this place, and returning after many years allowed me to see how beautifully it has been preserved.
The peaceful atmosphere during Maghrib prayer, the impressive architecture, and the careful restoration made me appreciate this historical site even more. Standing there reminded me that preserving our heritage is not just about protecting old buildings, it is about keeping our history alive for future generations.
Conclusion
Many historical places are surrounded by fascinating local legends, but discovering their true history is equally important.
For me, the Jinn Mosque is much more than a religious site. It represents my childhood memories, the cultural heritage of my hometown, and the remarkable journey from a neglected historical structure to a beautifully preserved landmark.
I sincerely hope this mosque will continue to be protected so that future generations can appreciate both its rich history and its unique architectural beauty.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read my post.
