Frames of My World

Even though I am in Dhaka city due to work and the busyness of daily life, I often feel the urge to go back to my roots. Recently, I went to my hometown, the Bhola district. When I got off at Bhola Ghat by launch from Dhaka, the familiar scent of the river and the air filled my chest. However, this time, a different face of Bhola, a great multifaceted story of the tireless work and livelihood of the common people, has been captured in the frame of my camera, which I will share with you today.

People & Everyday Life: Worker

A huge construction project has been built over a vast area next to the canal in the Sadar area of Bhola. As soon as I entered there, I heard the roar of crusher machines, the rhythmic sound of falling stone pieces, and the heavy noise of iron, wood, and ship repairs. This is not an ordinary sound; it is the melody of the struggle of hundreds of workers there to survive and make a living.

Where is this place located?

This extraordinarily busy place captured in my camera frame is located in Sadar Upazila of Bhola, the only island district of Bangladesh. To be precise, it is Head Dockyard, Kheyaghat Road, Bhola Sadar, Bhola. This dockyard, located near the bend of the canal that flows by, is where the entire activity of stone breaking, loading and unloading of goods is carried out.

Who are the people featured in your photographs and what are they doing?

Here, mainly local and some very hardworking people from far and wide work, whose careers are very diverse and multifaceted.

Looking at the camera frame, it can be seen that skilled workers are busy with various complex and risky tasks of repairing huge ships on one side of the dockyard. Right next to them, large rocks brought by huge rivers or trawlers are being broken into small stones using modern crusher machines. Basically, I have tried to portray the work of those workers in my camera frame. Not only that, a group of strong porters and wharf workers are also loading and unloading all the materials for building houses (such as rods, cement, bricks, stones, etc.) from the large cargo ships located across the wharf with great efficiency. Along with male workers, many female workers are also working shoulder to shoulder here in an equal rhythm.

How do these people contribute to the local community or economy?

In my opinion, the development of the entire Bhola region largely depends on the multifaceted work of the workers of this dockyard. On the one hand, they are keeping maritime communication active by repairing ships; on the other hand, the crushed stone and unloaded building materials they produce are supplied to various parts of the country, including interior regions of Bhola.

Construction of roads, construction of new buildings, or casting of bridges—the main foundation of any regional infrastructure development in Bhola is being provided from this head dockyard. If these workers had not worked day and night with this mechanical and physical work, the local construction industry and shipping system would have come to a standstill. They are not only providing food for their families but also keeping Bhola's local economy active and playing a very important role in the country's overall development.

What did you learn or observe while spending time in this place?

Standing there for some time and watching their multifaceted work, I encountered a strange sense of life. The intense sun, the deafening noise of machines all around, the clanking sound of heavy ships' iron and stone dust—all together, the work is extremely risky and tiring. Working near machines or while welding ships and loading heavy goods can cause major accidents due to a little carelessness. Despite all this hardship, the workers have no extra complaints. Talking to each other by pointing or shouting during work, drinking tea with a little smile—these simple things have moved me deeply. I learned that no matter how difficult life is, there is a different kind of mental satisfaction in fighting honestly, even amidst the mechanical noise and heavy physical labour, which can constantly inspire many of us.

The Struggle for Survival Among the Rocks

  • These two hardworking people are working tirelessly under the open sky, ignoring the loud mechanical noise and stone dust. Their daily struggle is to earn a living honestly, overcoming the harsh reality around them. The sweat and tireless work that accumulates on each of their foreheads is the real foundation of building our society and infrastructure, which is truly worthy of utmost respect.

A laborer carefully loads boulders onto the stone crusher conveyor

  • A hardworking worker, ignoring the intensity of the sun, is dragging large piles of stones and placing them on the conveyor belt of a crusher machine. Hidden in every step of feeding these rough stones to the machine is the urge to feed his family. These people, who work with a spirit stronger than stone, are the main craftsmen in building the society and infrastructure around us.

Labourers work tirelessly amid dust and noise from the crusher

  • Under an open stone crusher, covered in stone dust, two workers work tirelessly. One worker in a red shirt collects crushed stones in large bowls, while the other arranges them. The hard work, dust, and sun around them remind us of the harsh reality of our daily labor. These rocks are their livelihood, and in this harsh environment they are creating the story of their lives.

River ghat in twilight

  • When the twilight lights up the sky at the end of the day, the cargo boats anchored at this river ghat in Bhola and the piles of rough stones take on a peaceful appearance. Although this scene seems silent at first glance, behind each of these stones lies the tireless work of hardworking people who have toiled all day and a unique human struggle to live honestly.

Nature's Calmness Behind the Roughness: Twilight at Work

  • When the daylight ends and the twilight sky peeks out, a strangely calm atmosphere is created in this stone yard in Bhola. On one side is a large rough pile of concrete and stone, and right behind it stands a row of green coconut and palm trees surrounded by utmost compassion. This scene reminds us that no matter how hard and rough the hustle and bustle of life and the struggle for livelihood is, at the end of the day, every human being, like this calm nature, hides a little peace and a longing to return home.

Stone unloaded at the wharf

  • A huge pile of rough stones stands on the banks of this river in Bhola, and two old cargo boats are anchored just behind it. These stones are the building blocks of life for the workers here. Although people are not visible in the picture, behind this pile of stones lies the human story of the tireless work of many hardworking people day and night and their righteous living. Each rough stone bears witness to their patience and hard work.

A concrete mountain of labor built by invisible hands

  • At first glance, it is just a pile of stones, rough and lifeless. But a closer look reveals that every inch of this mountain of stone tells the story of a worker's blood-soaked sweat and patience. Even on this rough path of life, many hardworking hands dream of building such a building with utmost compassion every day, and the stones come alive at their touch.
What story or emotion do you think your photographs convey about everyday life?

These pictures I took basically reveal the story of The struggle to survive in the combination of modern machines and the versatile talent and labour of humans. The dusty body, the ears accustomed to the sound of machines, the stiff back from pulling goods, and the sweat on the forehead are not symbols of sadness but rather symbols of self-respect.
These frames remind us that behind the beautiful and safe environment we live in, sitting in air-conditioned homes or in the city, lies the blood-soaked labour of millions of people like the dockyard workers on Kheaghat Road in Bhola. The deep feeling of the pictures is the indomitable will of people to survive and the utmost respect for labour.
