Beyond the Map

I think every city has some roads that are not just brick and stone highways but silent witnesses to people's fears, security, and the changing pace of life. The road from Kalshi to ECB Chattar in Dhaka is just such an emotional road for me.

Every morning when I cross this wide highway and the Kalshi flyover in the rush of work, my mind unknowingly goes back to those dark days of childhood and adolescence. For me, the transformation of this road is not just a government development project; it is like a miraculous dream happening before my eyes. Where once there was darkness and a huge bottomless lake, today a vibrant form of modern Dhaka stands tall. On July 27, 2026, while going to the office like every day in the morning, I framed the story of this human transformation of my city.

1. Where is this place located, how can visitors reach it, and when did you visit it?

---

Basically, this road is a major junction in the northern part of Dhaka. It starts from Mirpur-12 (Kalshi) and touches Matikata and Dhaka Cantonment and directly connects to Kuril-Airport and Banani-Mohakhali roads.

• How to reach: I think it is very easy to travel from here to any part of Dhaka. You can reach it directly from Mirpur-10 or 12 by rickshaw for just 30-50 taka or by local bus for 10-15 taka. Many buses to ECB premises are also available from the airport, Kuril, or Mohakhali.

• Date of visit & Personal feeling: I crossed this road at 9:00 am on July 27, 2026. I think the fatigue of a working person's daily commute is greatly removed when you can ride a bike or car on such a clean and orderly road in the morning sun. To me, these scenes are not just pictures but a daily feeling of relief.

2. What is the history of this place, and why is it important to your town or city?

---

I still remember clearly what this area was like around 2003. Whenever I used to pass this path as a child, an unknown terror would work in my mind. Back then, it was a deserted, low-lying swampland and a large, deserted lake.

The most frightening thing for me was that since there was no light at that time and there were few people, various criminal acts often took place in this lake. The memory of the abandoned bodies floating in that lake that I saw with my own eyes as a child still makes me shudder! Criminals could easily commit crimes and hide in the darkness of this lake.

Later, when the Engineer Construction Battalion (ECB) of the Bangladesh Army took charge of this path, the change began. In my opinion, we have a deep sense of trust and relief associated with this name, ECB Chattar.

It seems to me that this road is not just a road for vehicles today but a great refuge that has removed the fear and restored a sense of security in the minds of thousands of local people.

3. How has this place changed over the years, or what evidence of its past can still be seen today?

To me, the transformation of this area over the past two decades is like an epic story. The path that once made me tremble even to walk alone is now safely traversed by thousands of people daily.

In my experience, the changes from 2003 to 2026:

4. What can visitors experience or learn by visiting this place today?

My impression of the visitors:

I think that if someone comes here today, they will not only see a modern street but also a beautiful city life. In the afternoon, when people walk along the sidewalks and talk in small snack shops, I think this street is a beautiful place to bring people together.

My lesson:

I deeply believe that with good will and the right plan, even a dark and dangerous place can be transformed into a center of human welfare and love - ECB Square is the greatest human proof of this.

5. Why do you think this place should be preserved and remembered for future generations?

1. To learn from history: I think our future generations should know how the once fearsome lake has become today's haven of relief.

2. As a symbol of humane urban planning: In my opinion, the street should be held up as an example of how to respect pedestrians, not just cars, with wide sidewalks and beautiful trees.

3. To maintain the continuity of memory: I think it is very important to remember how the nightmare of our past has been dispelled and a new dawn has dawned.
