Doodhpathri – The Valley of Milk.

Doodhpathri, which means “The Valley of Milk,” is a health resort located about 40 kilometers from Srinagar. It lies in Budgam district, which is a part of Central Kashmir.

The valley got its name because the Shaliganga River, which flows through it, turned milky in color when the Kashmiri saint Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani struck the ground with his walking stick. This is what we learn from the local folklore.

It is a high-altitude tourist destination situated at an elevation of around 3,000 meters above sea level. As you can see in the photographs, it is a valley made up of lush green meadows, surrounded by dense forests, with the Shaliganga River flowing alongside it. In the background are high mountains that remain covered with snow throughout the year.

It is a cool and refreshing destination. During the summer months, people from the lower areas come to Doodhpathri to escape the heat. It is a beautiful place where visitors come for camping, hiking, trekking, and many other activities.

People living in the nearby areas also visit Doodhpathri in the evenings for leisure. It is a vast area that, until a few years ago, was not included on the tourism map. Thanks to the government, this tourist destination was brought onto the tourism map and opened to the general public.

This place is preferred because there is still very little human disturbance and commercialization here. However, commercialization has now started gaining pace. We hope that the government’s regulations remain strict so that this place is not disturbed too much.

This destination is famous around the world for its beauty, and almost every tourist who visits Kashmir makes sure to visit Doodhpathri. It is also well known for horse riding and mountain biking.

People visit not only during the summer but also in winter because the snowfall makes this place even more beautiful and attracts visitors. Many tourists can be seen enjoying winter activities here.

Tourism is also a source of livelihood for thousands of people living in the surrounding villages. They have set up roadside eateries where they serve tea and their special makki ki roti. I think almost everyone who visits this place tries the tea and makki ki roti. Every time I have visited, I have made sure to have the tea. Makki ki roti served with desi ghee and pickle is a special combination here that almost everyone likes.

Due to security reasons, visitors are currently not allowed to go further up the mountains without permission from the security forces. Because of this, the trekking routes are presently closed. Even so, there are some special places beyond this point that are famous for trekking as well as for their beauty, including Diskhal and Palmaidan.

Since this is such a vast area, it never feels overcrowded no matter how many people are present. The open space easily accommodates everyone.

The roads leading to Doodhpathri are also beautiful. There is one particular stretch where the road descends in a zigzag pattern through the green meadows, creating an incredible and unforgettable view.

You will not see much infrastructure here because construction has been restricted. That is why the place still feels untouched.

One important thing is that despite being so far away, mobile network coverage is available here, so tourists and visitors do not face any difficulty staying connected with their families. Unlike Yusmarg, where there is still no mobile network and a person feels completely disconnected from the outside world, that is not the case in Doodhpathri.

The tall mountains surrounding Doodhpathri look absolutely stunning, and they make you want to climb them. Their slopes make them appear easy to climb, and people do climb them. However, as I mentioned earlier, because of the restrictions imposed by the security forces, people are no longer allowed to explore those distant areas freely.

This place is perfect for anyone who does not want to travel too far from Srinagar but still wants to visit a destination within the valley that is affordable and fulfills every expectation of a tourist. The road to Doodhpathri is full of slopes and curves, making the drive itself an adventure. Driving here is an experience in itself and is a lot of fun.

The lush green grass covering the meadows feels just like a natural carpet. Walking on this grass is an experience in itself. Its softness has an almost healing effect on your feet, and you feel completely refreshed. Visiting this place in the morning or evening allows you to detox, relax, and take a break from the stresses and anxieties of everyday life.

It is an incredibly beautiful place and nothing less than a paradise for people who love to connect with nature.
