Este distinguido artista plástico nació el 11 de noviembre de 1831 en Durham, Inglaterra (Reino Unido).

Desde muy joven sintió atracción por la pintura, pero sus padres deseosos de que no se dedicara a este oficio, lo exhortaron para que aprendiera el oficio de vidriero.

Era tan ferviente el deseo de Brown de convertirse en pintor que decidió tomar clases nocturnas en la Escuela de Diseño de Newcastle-on-Tyne, luego de que salía de su trabajo como cortador de vidrio.

Brown se mudó a Nueva York en el año 1853, y allí se matriculó en la Academia Nacional de Diseño. Su desempeño en la referida institución fue tan extraordinario que lo eligieron miembro de la misma en el año 1861. Luego, entre los años 1899 y 1904, Brown fue nombrado vicepresidente de la Academia.

Contrajo nupcias con la hija del dueño de la Brooklyn Glass Company. De modo que él pasó de ser empleado a ser el yerno de su empleador. Después de este matrimonio, el suegro de Brown decidió apoyarlo económicamente para que él se dedicara solo a la pintura.

Sus pinturas están enmarcadas en el arte de género, y fueron muy bien acogidas por coleccionistas adinerados .

Brown falleció en su casa, ubicada en la ciudad de Nueva York, el 8 de febrero de 1913. Para ese entonces tenía 81 años.

We've reached the 195th edition of this contest that fills me with so much joy. This year's guest is Juan Jorge Brown.

This distinguished visual artist was born on November 11, 1831, in Durham, England (United Kingdom).

From a very young age, he felt drawn to painting, but his parents, wanting to prevent him from pursuing this profession, urged him to learn the trade of glassmaking.

Brown's desire to become a painter was so fervent that he decided to take evening classes at the Newcastle-on-Tyne School of Design after finishing his work as a glass cutter.

Brown moved to New York in 1853, and there he enrolled at the National Academy of Design. His performance at the institution was so extraordinary that he was elected a member in 1861. Later, between 1899 and 1904, Brown served as Vice President of the Academy.

He married the daughter of the owner of the Brooklyn Glass Company. Thus, he went from being an employee to being his employer's son-in-law. After this marriage, Brown's father-in-law decided to support him financially so that he could dedicate himself solely to painting.

His paintings are framed within genre art and were very well received by wealthy collectors.

Brown died at his home in New York City on February 8, 1913. He was 81 years old at the time.
