Something for the soul.

Something for the soul.

If you're a gardener, or have visited someone who is, you've seen vegetable beds, fertile shrubs, and fruit trees. Often, you'll also see flower beds, trees that are beautiful but don't provide much in the way of winter food, such as conifers or exotic deciduous trees.

As a rule, a gardener will divide their work into work for the soul and work for the soul. The work for the soul is where flowers and exotic plants that don't bear fruit will grow.

Well, yes, flowers are beautiful, but it's somehow unfair to say that you pour your heart and soul into growing roses, while you only put physical labor into growing potatoes and tomatoes.

Personally, I remember how overwhelmed with joy I was when the first tiny cucumbers appeared on the cucumber vines, and when the first florets bloomed...

After picking Colorado potato beetles from your potatoes, turn around and look at the clean, bug-free potato sprouts, and you'll realize how much of a relief it is to the soul when the job is done; at such moments, there's no time to look at flowers.

But yes, it's nice to see flowers in the flowerbed.
