Bayern Munich 4-3 Real Madrid

I am a little late with my analysis of this game, I just had to give it some thought and watch a few replays. First of all I have to again repeat the dumb idea that playing the ball back to your goal keeper can be, case in point Arda Guler's 36 second goal. A needless goal, the defenders role is to keep the ball as far away from his area as possible, but it seems that today's managers think giving the goal all the way back to the goalkeeper is the way to go. All this actually does, if the play comes out well is lose seconds in forming an attack and if it goes wrong it is highly likely to cause big trouble.

So this first goal is on Neuer, but I would mostly blame tactics. Then Bayern scored a goal which frankly did not have to go in, a huge mistake by Lunin. Then we had, I think the first referee mistake of the game, he gave Real a foul for a non existent contact on Brahim Diaz. The shot was taken by Guler who made a very nice free kick, but I think this was more a Neuer mistake than a Guler brilliance. I mean Neuer actually ran inside his goal, and his had was on the line, of course he would not keep it out like that. Probably his age showed in that moment.

Then we had the Harry Kane goal, a classical goal by a man who is spot on with his shots when he gets them, nearly always makes good on his shots, either they are goals or good saves by the goalkeeper. A typical center forward from my days, they used to play like that, no flourishes just good at scoring. After this we had Mbappe's goal, and here we have another referee mistake, Rudiger certainly fouled a Bayern player to take the ball from which the goal was created. Thus finished the first half Bayern down 2-3.

The second half as expected was a Bayern all out on attack with Madrid defending and looking for a counterattack. And then Arbeloa made a mistake, he substituted Brahim Diaz with Camavinga. Why would he do that? First of all his team is doing OK, does not need subs at that moment and I don't think Diaz was injured. Camavinga has not been playing regularly and the times he has played he has not looked good. So several minutes after he came on the pitch he got his first yellow card, and I think he did make the right decision, Musiala was heading for the goal and there was a Bayern player racing in on his left, if Camavinga had not fouled I think it was a goal.

But his second foul was all his mistake, first of all a foul was not needed and then he tried to be funny by holding on to the ball. Madrid fans of course say that the yellow card should not have been given, I think it was the right decision. I forgot a few minutes before this Neuer saved Bayern from a great Madrid counterattack and a nice Mbappe shot.Well just after Camavinga being sent off Luis Diaz score the tie with a good shot and Olise finished it off with a great goal.

It actually was a great game, but let's be real, Bayern had a 67% possession, had a lot of corner shots and definitely were the much better team. But I have to admit Real Madrid played this game really well and it almost paid off, if this had gone to extra time, I would have bet on neither team.
