The Screen Addict Recommends – The Suicide Squad (2021)
James Gunn and DC’s 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗱 is extremely close in spirit to Marvel’s 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗿: 𝗥𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗸 (𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟳) and 𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘅𝘆 (𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟰). Not a huge surprise of course, considering the involvement of both Gunn and Taika Waititi.
I, for one, absolutely, positively, wholeheartedly LOVED 𝗧𝗦𝗦. It is such a wonderful breath of fresh air after recent disappointments in the Superhero genre – which I will not mention or write about, in accordance with my Every. Film. Counts. philosophy.
And although it was not a (theatrical) hit, Gunn’s 𝗧𝗦𝗦 does feature many meticulously crafted characters that simply demand spinoffs – small screen or otherwise.
Case in point is John Cena’s Peacemaker, a wonderfully iconoclastic “Superhero” who had his own series premiere on HBO Max.
Personally, I would also love to see Sylvester Stallone’s King Shark get his own show – the murderous jellyfish could be the antagonists! – but then again, that might prove a tad bit too expensive.
In any event, I think Gunn’s 𝗧𝗦𝗦 is a terrific expansion of the universe initiated by David Ayer five years earlier. The numbers don’t lie – Ayer’s version generated roughly $600 million more in ticket sales than Gunn’s vision did – but hey, so much has changed since then…
Seek it out & get your fix.
