The apostles and the gifts: The members of the Council were amazed to see how bold Peter and John were and to learn that they were ordinary men of no education. Acts 4:13
Jesus, as recounted in the Book of Acts, after his resurrection and before his ascension to heaven, spoke to his disciples, giving them many proofs that he was alive, and promised them that they would receive the baptism in salt and fire, that is, the baptism of the Holy Spirit. And some time later, after Jesus' final departure from this world, the disciples were able to verify the promise of Jesus at the celebration of Pentecost, occasion in which the disciples received the gifts of the holy spirit in tongues of fire.
And the gifts of the Spirit brought about a profound transformation in the disciples who were able to understand with their minds the truth and nature of God through the contemplative life. The disciples were never again the same people as before. But despite this great joy, persecution and oppression against the early Church soon appeared, because Jesus had many enemies, particularly the religious authorities in Jerusalem.
And it happened that John and Peter went one afternoon to pray at the temple, and there Peter performed a miracle by healing a paralytic. As a result, the people who were in the temple approached the disciples, and Peter gave his second speech there, bearing witness to Jesus. But the priests and the temple guards also came and arrested Peter and John, taking them to prison.
The next day, under interrogation, the Book of Acts recounts the impression the disciples made before the Sanhedrin: "The members of the Council were amazed to see how bold Peter and John were and to learn that they were ordinary men of no education. They realized then that they had been companions of Jesus" Acts 4:13.
The gifts of the Holy Spirit gave the disciples knowledge, spiritual discernment, and great eloquence, which amazed even the enemies of the Church. The Book of Acts relates that John and Peter were released, but not before being threatened. But this did not discourage the disciples because they knew that at Pentecost they had received that pearl of great price that Jesus had spoken of in one of his parables. The Holy Spirit, with His gifts, worked a great miracle, and the apostles bore witness to this through their faith, which overcame fear and oppression.
