I found a giant marble Jesus, and other religious icons

There is a place in Da Nang that is called Marble Mountain. As you might expect this is because the mountain is made of marble. Because of this, there are a lot of shops around here that make custom marble statues and I saw a lot of similar ones so I kind of assumed that they were full of crap and that they are actually made in a factory.

That was until one day I was wandering around and heard some tools in the distance and noticed that people were hand-cutting these statues.

I was kind of surprised to find some of them, especially Jesus.

My apologies for the blur, but the workers had taken notice of me and were staring in my direction. I don't know how they feel about people taking pictures and sometimes men out in these kind of rural areas can become a bit agitated simply by your presence so I thought it best to just move on.

I did get a few other shots before I scampered off though.

Some of these appear to be Buddhist in nature but I honestly don't know what they are. If you happen to know I would be interested to hear about it. The thing that is beating up a Lion could be Greek mythology? I'm so uneducated.

Now here we have something that appears to be tribal but again, I have no idea. They are very large though and now that I know that they are all genuinely hand-carved I have a greater level of respect for the craftsmanship.

All in all there was quite a few of them just sitting out here. I have to imagine that they must be very heavy and there isn't a great deal of concern of anyone stealing them. They are not locked up or watched after very closely. I would imagine that they are completely unattended at night. I suppose it would be very difficult to quietly hook up a crane and a giant truck to steal them though.

I think you would have to be a pretty horrible person to steal a statue of Jesus but then again, people steal pets here so maybe someone would try.

I've lived here for nearly 8 years and I never knew this was here. I think it is pretty cool. I don't collect anything though and if I did it wouldn't be gigantic marble statues of religious figures.
