Everything Has A Price

in #athletics7 years ago

Top athletes are very often envied by those who are not famous. Many wish to be in their shoes, some without doing anything for it but that's not relevant right now.

I was wondering if they know what celebrity athlete's life look like most of the time.

I'm not a huge fan of motivational speeches but I like to watch Bolt's movies and interviews as what he says motivates me. The reason is those words are not empty words like quotes you can find on the internet. His words are based on his experience and he hes credibility, his results are something you have to take seriously.

Watching his movies and interviews made me think of how his life must have been. How different his life must have been up until he retired.

I remember him in a hotel room alone the night before a major competition. I can't remember exactly which one it was but it's not important as every evening before a competition is pretty much the same. He was doing a video, telling fans he can't sleep although he should be sleeping already, that he's bored and would love to go out and have fun. He obviously couldn't.

The other moment that stuck in my mind was when he was telling about an evening when he went out with friends to a club to relax and have some fun and walking down the stairs he made a wrong step that caused him a great deal of trouble. He was sent to Germany to a specialist, ordered to stay still for three weeks if I can recall exactly and his participation to a major competition was unsure as not only he could not train but also wasn't sure his injury will heal properly.

You expect athletes to get injured on the track during training or competitions and then things like this happen.

These are just a few things but there's also the possibility of his drink or food being contaminated with banned substances, which can lead to failing the doping test.

He was asked what he's going to do after retiring and his answer was funny in a way but normal. He said eat junk food and party with friends. I can fully understand him.

Success is not for free, it requires lots of sacrifices that is not visible on the screen.

The other athlete that is a role model for me is a runner from Romania Gabriela Szabo, who also made history as she's a three-time world champion. In an interview she said she's training six month in Romania, during summer and then in South Africa to avoid the cold winter in Romania.

Running outdoor during winter can be fun. I've done it many times and you get used to it but she had to have the temperature of the cities hosting the competitions she intended to take part in. Having the same conditions can help you a lot. Not many can afford to live and train abroad and I'm pretty sure the Romanian Athletic Federation is not sponsoring such actions.

She had a nutritionist telling her what and how much she can eat, she had to respect that diet no matter what in order to have the desired weight.

Being a top athlete means a lot of sacrifices, you have to give up your childhood and a part of your life as a young adult. That's the other side of the medal that can't be seen by those who are watching the events.
