Lebron headed to 76ers: Should Philly fans be excited?

When LeBron went up for a transfer window all of NBA news was talking about where he was going to end up. There is something to keep in mind about LeBron and that is that the dude is nearly 40 (he may already be) and while still a high quality player, his best days are behind him. Sure, he is still marketing gold but is he really an asset that is "worth it" to whatever team he goes to?

The Sixers are probably a decent team for him to go to but the thing is they don't really need him for the fanbase or talent, and some are saying that LeBron's big head and ego could potentially screw up the team dynamic. I believe these are both very reasonable and viable fears. Can LeBron allow someone else to take the helm? I suppose we will see!

Let's get one thing straight, this is not a financial move on the part of LeBron and it was totally his choice to move there. At the end of his contract with the Lakers, he wasn't obligated to continue to play at all and the Lakers had no say in where he went. He could have gone anywhere. He chose Philly for his own reasons, maybe because it is the only place in America where the fans are more violent than they are in L.A.

James is getting a massive pay cut going from over $50 million a year (which is absurd) to less than $4 million which I believe is the league minimum for anyone with 10 years of NBA experience.

Philly hasn't won a championship in over 40 years and LeBron hopes to be a key element that can change that. The question remain that exists in my original statement though: Will the egotistical man be able to take instructions and allow the current roster, who is already very good, take charge or will his presence just be "flop city" and perhaps even a hindrance to their overall performance.

I can see it going either way and remember, the Sixers are not obligated to even put the guy on the hardwood if he is a problem and the increased jersey sales will likely be enough to pay for his salary.

I am reminded of when Jordan went to play for the Washington Wizards after retiring and he took a $1 million per year salary. He attempted to act as a mentor and was willing to take a back seat to the younger guys. It didn't end up mattering a great deal though because the Wizards were awful even with Jordan. They still haven't done much since then either.

LeBron could help the Sixers win a championship and well, a lot of pressure is going to be on the team to make exactly that happen. Ticket prices could go up and certainly will at least at the start of the season. I don't see many ways that this can go badly actually but I do think that people are overestimating how much of an impact a 41-year old person can have on a team, even if it is King James.
