Impact of Reflection on Cognitive Development and Spiritual Development; An Islamic Perspective on Critical Thinking
أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Assalamu-Alaikum-wa-Rahmatullahi- wa-Barakatuh!
Today, there is a multitude of information that is available to us all the time; however, it is becoming increasingly important that we take the time to reflect deeply on this information through the practice of reflection. Reflection can be both a mental exercise and also a spiritual one. In the Qur'an, Allah encourages all humans to think about, observe and consider the signs of creation. For example, in the following verse, we find this encouragement for us to reflect on what we see: "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth.....signs are for those who use reason" - (Qur'an 3:190). This verse shows us that God provides us with knowledge, we are to look at and observe what we see, and through this process of critical thinking we will build our faith. Therefore, critical thinking will help you decide what you should do, and spiritual reflection will develop your ability to live a life of wisdom, humility, and purpose. When you combine these two, you will have a basis for personal development and lifelong learning.
