Unity in the faith: And you are part of that building Christ has built as a place for God's own Spirit to live. Ephesians 2:22
The letter to the Ephesians appears to be a homily written by the apostle Paul and intended for some churches in Asia Minor that he visited. Regarding the time of its writing, the apostle, at the end of his letter, alludes to being chained, probably referring to his situation in the city of Rome, where he was to be judged by the emperor.
Paul began his exhortation by explaining how the life of Christ, as the Son of the Father, through his sacrifice, redeemed all believers from the slavery of sin. And that through this redemption, believers receive the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit, such as the gifts of wisdom, spiritual discernment, and understanding, so that they may live according to God's will. Through Christ, then, believers, both of pagan and Jewish origin, become one people and are called, according to Paul, to the new freedom of the Kingdom of God, to live the spiritual gifts inherited from above. This is why Paul alluded to the fact that the sacrament of baptism brings a new citizenship, a heavenly citizenship, a spiritual concept that Paul also expressed in other letters, and which he taught with these words: "You are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God's people and also members of his household" Ephesians 2:19.
And Paul also taught that there is one Spirit, and that by this Spirit there should be one unity in faith. And this unity in the faith, through the spiritual love given by the Holy Spirit, could be seen or compared to a great building, with Christ as the cornerstone, and so Paul wrote: "You are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. Christ Jesus himself is the cornerstone" Ephesians 2:20. Paul highlighted the gift of unity as a charism of the Spirit, and a confirmation of the gift of faith. That is why the apostle continued with his spiritual teaching: "And you are part of that building Christ has built as a place for God's own Spirit to live" Ephesians 2:22.
In short, according to Paul's thinking, all Christians, for the sake of unity, are called to equality with the saints, and the Church is that living building that must bear witness to the faith in order to carry out God's plan.
