On the manual vs automated curation: @noisy is working on WISE - a more intelligent curation mechanism where one can delegate on per vote basis to people who are more aware in a given area. The delegating party doesn't read the material upvoted, but someone else does and rewards it a little extra. And the delegator can withdraw a vote that doesn't agree with his or her preferences.
This sounds like an interesting idea, I will have to check it out. Thank you!
