18 FOR WHEN THEY SPEAK GREAT SWELLING WORDS OF EMPTINESS, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error.
19 While they promise them liberty, THEY THEMSELVES ARE SLAVES OF CORRUPTION; FOR BY WHOM A PERSON IS OVERCOME, BY HIM ALSO HE IS BROUGHT INTO BONDAGE.
20 FOR IF, AFTER THEY HAVE ESCAPED THE POLLUTION OF THE WORLD THROUGH THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST, THEY ARE AGAIN ENTANGLED IN THEM AND OVERCOME, THE LATTER END IS WORSE FOR THEM THAN THE BEGINNING.
21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.
22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A DOG RETURNS TO HIS OWN VOMIT,” AND, “A SOW, HAVING WASHED, TO HER WALLOWING IN THE MIRE."
2 Peter 2:18–22 (NKJV)

Whatever gets the better of you had get control over you already—you are in bondage to it: "WHILE THEY PROMISE THEM LIBERTY, THEY THEMSELVES ARE SLAVES OF CORRUPTION; FOR BY WHOM a PERSON IS OVERCOME, BY HIM ALSO HE IS BROUGHT INTO BONDAGE" (2 Peter 2:19 NKJV).

"THEY PROMISE FREEDOM, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. FOR YOU ARE A SLAVE TO WHATEVER CONTROLS YOU."
2 Peter 2:19 (NLT)

Whatever overpowers or overwhelms your body or mind, as a believer in Christ Jesus, which you could not bring under the control or influence of your spirit, the inward Man; such has gotten a total control over your life.
There are many things that can enslave a believer If he or she refused to work on their human nature to be subjected to the inward Man—their recreated human spirit.
Whoever has been made free from the corruption of the world should not give a place or an opportunity or a chance to the devil to enslave them again.
There are people who claim to be believers, presenting themselves to have been free from the claws or the slavery or the oppression of sin and the devil; but through their ways and manner of life, they are still under the bondage of the wicked one—the devil (Titus 1:16).
Some of such people go about, presenting themselves as of God and promising to help others overcome whatever sin or carnal desire they are struggling with: "WHILE THEY PROMISE THEM LIBERTY, THEY THEMSELVES ARE SLAVES OF CORRUPTION . . . (2 Peter 2:19 NKJV).
The blind cannot lead another blind, except both would fall into a ditch: AND HE [Jesus] SPOKE A PARABLE TO THEM: “CAN THE BLIND LEAD THE BLIND? WILL THEY NOT BOTH FALL INTO THE DITCH?" (Luke 6:39 NKJV).

Someone who had been set free but could not keep his or her freedom and get enslaved again by sin and the devil; the end of such a person would be worst: "FOR IF, AFTER THEY HAVE ESCAPED THE POLLUTION OF THE WORLD THROUGH THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST, THEY ARE AGAIN ENTANGLED IN THEM AND OVERCOME, THE LATTER END IS WORSE FOR THEM THAN THE BEGINNING" (2 Peter 2:20 NKJV).
A believer can miss it or lose his or her consecration. In fact, salvation of a person's soul can be lost; If someone who professed to be born-again kept going back into sin and indulging his or her flesh, such might be thrown to the devil and be allowed to be dealt with (1 Corinthians 5:5).
Also, a believer who does not judge himself or herself would be judged with the world, the unbelievers: "FOR IF WE WOULD JUDGE OURSELVES, WE WOULD NOT BE JUDGED [or condemned with the world]" (1 Corinthians 11:31 NKJV).
