How to Spot a Rug Pull Before It's Too Late
Rug pulls still take millions from crypto users every year. Here's how to spot them early.
Warning Signs
- Anonymous team - No doxxed founders, no real identities
- Locked liquidity? - Check if LP tokens are locked. If not, the devs can drain the pool
- No audits - Legit projects have at least one audit from a known firm
- Too-good APY - 1000%+ APY is not a yield, it's a trap
- Pressure tactics - "Limited time", "don't miss out" = classic exit scam playbook
The Checklist Before You Invest
- [ ] Team is doxxed and verifiable
- [ ] Liquidity locked for 12+ months
- [ ] At least 1 audit (read it, don't just check the badge)
- [ ] Contract is verified on the explorer
- [ ] No admin keys that can mint or pause
- [ ] Active, organic community (not bots)
Tools to Check
- DEXTools / DexScreener for liquidity and holders
- TokenSniffer for contract red flags
- GitHub for code transparency
- Etherscan/chain explorer for verified source
Do your research. It takes 10 minutes and saves you thousands.
