Plan B läuft! – Mit 48 nochmal auf die Schulbank [GER/ENG]

in #deutsch26 days ago

Hallo meine lieben Squadis,

Hello my dear Squadis,

believe it or not, it has actually been a good 10 weeks since I last posted here.

Today was a very special day: my first day as an IT specialist trainee for system integration in Dortmund.

I have to be honest with you: starting all over again and retraining at the age of 48 feels damn strange at first.

You sit there amidst all the new impressions and think to yourself: "Okay, here we go again for real."

Some of you are probably wondering: "Wait a minute, weren't you planning to do a modular training program instead of the full retraining?"

You are absolutely right, that was the original plan.

But as it often goes with bureaucracy: the employment agency found the targeted training program too expensive at nearly €20,000 because it did not include an official vocational degree.

The result of that logic: instead of the "expensive" short solution, there is now Plan B: a part-time retraining to become an IT specialist for system integration.

The whole thing now takes 36 months (which is twice as long) and will end up costing the state almost €50,000.

It doesn't really make sense, but hey, Plan B has now officially started!

By the way, it wasn't easy at all to find a provider that even offers this retraining in part-time. But I made it happen.

The day was a real rollercoaster ride. Let's start with the positives:

I was really pleasantly surprised by my new workstation for the next three years.

I received a laptop from HP that is very high-quality and a real workhorse, which makes tinkering and learning a lot more fun right from the start.

That definitely makes a nerd's heart beat faster!

The downside? The good old Deutsche Bahn. The way there was almost eerie: everything was on time and I was even 40 minutes early in Dortmund.

But the way back... what can I say, just "typical DB". Suddenly, the train could not stop in Essen anymore.

The end of the story: it took me two hours and I had to make my way home from Gelsenkirchen by tram.

Hey Wahnsinn, Respekt!

I can relate to feeling a little out of place starting something new at an older age, but it's great that you're taking the leap and pursuing your goals - this is going to be an exciting journey! 🚂💪
