What Australia’s Lowest Quarterly Electricity Prices in Six Years Reveal About Solar and Battery Storage
Australia’s electricity market is continuing to change, and the latest quarterly figures provide another clear sign of how renewable generation and battery storage are reshaping the grid.
According to a recent Energy Magazine report covering the Australian Energy Market Operator’s Quarterly Energy Dynamics results, average wholesale electricity prices across the National Electricity Market fell substantially during the June quarter of 2026.
The NEM-wide average wholesale spot price reached $74 per megawatt hour, representing a 47 per cent reduction compared with the same quarter in 2025. It was also the lowest June-quarter average recorded since 2020.
While falling wholesale prices will not necessarily produce an immediate or equal reduction in every household electricity bill, the figures reveal an important shift in how electricity is being generated, stored and delivered across Australia.
Renewable Energy Is Supplying More of the Grid
The reduction in wholesale electricity prices was not caused by one factor alone.
Wind generation reached a new June-quarter high, increasing by 20 per cent compared with the previous year. Grid-scale solar generation also increased, while distributed solar systems continued to supply electricity from Australian homes and businesses.
Together, these changes lifted renewable energy’s share of National Electricity Market generation to 42.1 per cent during the quarter.
This matters because wind and solar can supply electricity without the same ongoing fuel costs faced by coal and gas-fired generation. When renewable output is strong and available supply increases, wholesale market prices can fall.
At the same time, coal-fired generation declined to a new June-quarter low, while gas-fired generation recorded its lowest June-quarter average since 2003.
The result was not simply more renewable electricity. It was a noticeably different energy mix.
Batteries Are Becoming More Influential
One of the most important developments was the expanding role of grid-scale battery storage.
Battery systems increasingly charged during periods of strong daytime solar production and discharged during the afternoon and evening, when electricity demand and prices would traditionally rise.
Compared with the June quarter of 2025, daytime battery charging increased by more than 200 per cent, while evening discharging also more than tripled.
Batteries were involved in setting electricity prices during 36 per cent of dispatch intervals, up from 17 per cent one year earlier.
This shows that battery storage is no longer operating at the edge of Australia’s electricity market. It is becoming an active part of how energy is shifted between different periods of the day.
By absorbing electricity when renewable generation is abundant and releasing it when demand is higher, batteries can help flatten price peaks and reduce the market’s reliance on more expensive generation.
The Same Principle Applies at Home
The role of large-scale batteries reflects a principle that also applies to residential solar systems.
Rooftop solar panels generally produce the most electricity during daylight hours. However, many households consume more electricity in the morning and evening, when solar generation is lower or no longer available.
Without storage, excess daytime solar may be exported to the grid. The household may then need to purchase electricity again after sunset.
A home battery can help shift some of that excess solar into the evening. Instead of relying only on feed-in tariff credits, homeowners can use more of the electricity produced by their own solar system.
This is why solar battery storage and self-consumption are becoming increasingly important considerations for Australian households.
The value of a battery is not simply determined by its advertised capacity. It depends on whether the system matches the household’s real energy pattern.
Important factors include:
- how much solar electricity is exported during the day;
- how much electricity is imported after sunset;
- the household’s electricity tariff;
- the battery’s usable capacity;
- inverter charging and discharging capability;
- seasonal differences in solar production;
- and future loads such as electric vehicles or electric hot water.
Lower Wholesale Prices Do Not Remove the Need for Energy Planning
Lower wholesale electricity prices are positive for the broader energy market, but households should not assume that electricity usage no longer needs to be managed carefully.
Retail bills are influenced by more than the quarterly wholesale market. Household tariffs, supply charges, network costs and usage patterns can still have a significant effect on the final bill.
The stronger lesson from the latest market figures is that timing matters.
Electricity is often less valuable when renewable supply is abundant and more valuable when demand increases later in the day. Both grid-scale and residential batteries are designed to manage that timing difference.
For homeowners, the first step should be understanding when electricity is produced, exported and consumed.
Some households may improve their results by moving appliances, pool pumps, hot water systems or EV charging into daylight hours. Others may have a clear pattern of high daytime exports and high evening imports, making battery storage more relevant.
Australia’s Energy Transition Is Becoming More Practical
The latest quarterly results demonstrate that Australia’s energy transition is not only about building more renewable generation.
The grid also needs technology that can manage when renewable electricity is available.
Solar generation produces energy during daylight hours. Wind production changes with weather conditions. Battery storage helps connect those periods of renewable supply with the times when homes and businesses need electricity most.
The combination of increased renewable output, growing battery participation and reduced evening peak demand contributed to substantially lower wholesale electricity prices during the quarter.
For households, the same transition is occurring on a smaller scale.
Solar panels, hybrid inverters, energy monitoring and correctly sized batteries can work together to help households use electricity more strategically. The objective should not be to install the largest possible system, but to create one that matches real consumption and future energy needs.
As Australia’s electricity market continues to evolve, the ability to generate, store and manage energy at the right time will become increasingly important.
