Faith in Jesus: God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. 1 John 4:9
Following the literary style taught in his gospel, the apostle John wrote his first letter to several churches in Asia Minor to teach what spiritual communion with Christ and divine filiation really consist of, and thus combat the heresies that threatened the early Church.
And John began his first letter by presenting Jesus as the personification of the Word of Life with these words: "The Word of life existed from the beginning. We have heard it. We have seen it. We observed and touched it" 1 John 1:1. The apostle John reminded in his letter to the believers in Christ that the word is the wisdom itself, and through this word, which is also the Lord Jesus, the world and the entire universe were created, and through this word, which is eternal and uncreated, God loves men and all his creatures with mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) and righteousness.
It is important to note that John makes it clear in his letter that love comes from the word, because this fact determines what the love of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is like. For just as there is a love that comes from concupiscence, there is also a love that comes from wisdom. Love is a genre, because one loves what one desires.
The apostle John emphasized the new commandment in his epistle and how this commandment arises from the love of God, because just as God loves us, we must love our brothers and sisters. This is why, later, in his letter, the apostle John wrote the following words about the spiritual gift of eternal life and the love of God: "God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him" 1 John 4:9. John taught that Jesus came into the world with a spiritual mission: to teach the Father's love to men, the love projected towards the whole creation of God, and thus give men a new spiritual life, the contemplative life. Whoever understands this understands what true faith in Jesus consists of. Because eternal life, which is the supreme spiritual good for all Christians, makes believers one heart and one mind with God. The good love, the love that comes from wisdom, is for John what gives meaning to life united to the faith, a faith that must be lived to carry out God's plan in the world.
