With the first rays of the morning, life awakens in the rural areas.
On one such golden morning, the farmer Ramu stood ready in the courtyard of his home. Today, he had to carry out the crucial task of weeding and tilling his fields. The gentle summer sun was out, making it the perfect time to aerate the soil. Ramu neatly arranged his hoe, hand trowel, spade, and other essential farming tools in his sturdy wooden cart. He hitched his two oxen to the cart and, chanting "Bam-Bam Bhole," set off towards the fields.
As the cart's wheels rolled over the unpaved paths, a familiar rumbling sound echoed through the air. This journey to the fields in his cart brought Ramu immense peace. The lush green fields on either side of the path and the chirping of birds from the trees were truly captivating. Before long, Ramu arrived at his fertile field. He tethered his oxen comfortably under the shade of a tree and unloaded his tools from the cart.
Upon reaching the field, he noticed that along with the crops, various unwanted weeds had sprung up, stealing nutrients from the main crop. Without weeding and tilling, the crop's growth could be stunted. Without wasting a moment, Ramu tightened the cloth around his waist, picked up his hand trowel, and stepped into the field. He began loosening the soil between the plants with the trowel. This process, known as 'gudai' (tilling/hoeing), aerates the soil, allowing oxygen, water, and nutrients to reach the roots easily.
The sun was gradually growing stronger, and beads of sweat began to glisten on Ramu's forehead; yet, his face clearly reflected his love and dedication towards his fields. He uprooted the weeds from around each plant, removing them entirely. Weeding and hoeing not only left the field neat and tidy but also helped retain soil moisture for a longer period.
By late afternoon, his arduous labor was complete. Ramu gathered his tools, placed them back in the cart, and unyoked the oxen. Gazing at the fields, he felt a strange sense of satisfaction—a joy known only to the farmer who has toiled and sweated. He climbed onto his cart and headed home in the glow of the setting sun.
