Troubleshooting Garage Door Opener Issues: Safety Sensors and Remote Frequencies
You press your garage door remote, the opener clicks, the light turns on, but the door doesn't move. Or worse, the door starts closing, gets halfway down, and automatically reverses back open.
Garage door opener issues are incredibly frustrating. But before you call a technician, you can troubleshoot a few common electrical and signal issues yourself. Here is a guide on how to diagnose safety sensors and remote frequency problems.
- The Safety Sensors: Misalignment and Obstructions
Federal safety regulations require all automatic garage door openers to include photoelectric safety sensors. These sensors project an invisible infrared beam across the bottom of the door opening. If the beam is broken, the door will not close.
The Symptom: The door will open fine, but when you try to close it, it reverses, and the opener lights flash.
The Fix: Check the small LED lights on both sensors. One should be solid green, and the other solid amber/red. If one is blinking or off, they are misaligned. Gently adjust the sensor bracket until both lights are solid. Also, ensure the lenses are clean and free of spiderwebs or dust.
- Remote Control Frequency Interference
Sometimes, your wall button works perfectly, but your wireless remotes fail to open the door unless you are standing right next to it. This is usually caused by radio frequency (RF) interference.
The Symptom: Poor remote range or total remote failure despite new batteries.
The Fix: LED lightbulbs installed inside the garage door opener are a common source of RF interference. Certain cheap LED bulbs emit signals that block the remote's receiver. Try swapping the bulbs for specialty garage door LED bulbs or standard incandescents to restore your range.
When the Issue is Mechanical
If your opener motor makes a loud grinding noise but the door does not move, the internal gear is likely stripped, or you have a broken spring that is preventing the door from lifting.
