Families Erased by Missiles: "The Sole Survivor"—A Label Haunting Gaza’s Children Amidst the Absence of Peace
For the residents of the Gaza Strip, the October 2025 truce was nothing more than ink on paper; relentless Israeli bombardment continues to wipe entire families from civil registry records, leaving behind tragic stories of children who suddenly found themselves the "sole survivors" of death. In the span of just four days, two children—Sami and Ayham—joined this harrowing list after losing eight members of their respective families.
Sami Abu Qasim: Crawling Alone Toward Life
At dawn last Wednesday, the life of three-year-old Sami Abu Qasim changed forever. An Israeli airstrike targeting his family’s apartment in Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip, killed his father Omar (33), his mother Asmaa (32), and his six-year-old sister Habiba.
Amidst the flames consuming the home, the injured toddler crawled on his belly toward the door, making his way to safety despite suffering burns on his feet and left hand. Sami had gone to sleep in his family's embrace, only to wake up alone in the hospital, facing a future without a support system.
Ayham Nasman: A Minute of Shopping That Altered Destiny
Just days after Sami’s tragedy, the same scenario played out for 13-year-old Ayham Nasman in the Al-Nasr neighborhood of western Gaza City; however, his survival was due to the fact that he had briefly stepped out of the house to buy supplies for his family. Upon his return, Ayham found the apartment completely destroyed; his parents and three siblings had all been killed. Heart-wrenching videos circulated showing Ayham standing silently in the hospital, tears streaming down his face as he stood before the bodies of his family—wiped out in a single instant.
The Reality of Numbers and the Mirage of a Truce
The stories of Sami and Ayham embody a broader reality that is consuming childhood in Gaza; according to data from the Government Media Office, the Israeli army has completely wiped out more than 6,020 Palestinian families (totaling 12,917 individuals) since the war began.
Despite the announcement of a ceasefire agreement in October 2025, Palestinians dismiss it as a "mirage" amidst ongoing military violations and a suffocating blockade. The Ministry of Health in the Strip reports that these violations alone have resulted in the deaths of 1,127 Palestinians and the injury of 3,643 others since the truce took effect. These figures add to a staggering war toll exceeding 73,000 dead and 173,000 wounded, alongside the destruction of 90% of the Strip's infrastructure.
