Early Life: Born in Sumner County, Tennessee, Rogan was one of 12 children born to a former slave. He began growing rapidly at age 13.
Health: Due to severe ankylosis (stiffening of the joints), Rogan was eventually unable to walk or stand without assistance. In many of his later public appearances, he was seen in a specialized cart he used for mobility.
Legacy: At the time of his death at age 37, he weighed only 175 pounds, making him extremely thin for his height. He remains the second tallest man ever recorded, surpassed only by Robert Wadlow, who was 8 feet 11 inches tall.
