The Epistle to the Colossians is one of the last and shortest letters written by the apostle Paul while he was a captive in Rome. This letter was written by the apostle to the Gentiles to help his disciple Epaphras, to evangelize the Christian community of Colossae, a city near Ephesus, in Asia Minor. As in many of his letters, the main purpose of this one was to address the problem of heresies through the faithful teaching of the good news.
The times in which Paul lived were times of confusion, and just as there were supposed Christians who denied the divinity of Christ, there were others who demanded circumcision from pagans to enter the Church. And Paul, as a guided, enlightened, and inspired person, was against all these things. This is why Paul began his letter by expressing that he prayed without ceasing for that community, asking God to grant the believers the gift of wisdom so that they could savor spiritual things. Paul knew that the Church as a community was the result of the free action of grace upon believers.
And after this, the apostle Paul wrote a hymn in the style of the psalms of the Old Testament to remind the believers in Colossae about the nature of Christ so that the faith placed in them through Epaphras would not be threatened by heresies. And the anthem begins with these words: "The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created" Colossians 1:15-16. And then Paul wrote: "For it was by God's own decision that the Son has in himself the full nature of God" Colossians 1:19. With this, Paul recalled teachings that were later written in the Gospel of John. Jesus is God who becomes "Son of Man," that is, Jesus is the personification of the perfections of God; Jesus is the personification of God's mercy, wisdom, and perseverance. Jesus is not an angel, or a mere prophet, but the second person of the Holy Trinity. With this, Paul laid the foundation for the theological thought of the first century after Christ, along with other apostles such as James and Peter.
