My 30-Day "Sugar Detox" Challenge: Day 1 - Wait, How Much Sugar Is in a Bowl of Rice?

in #healthlast month

The Rice Reality Check 🍚

I always thought I was "eating healthy." I don't eat cakes. I don't drink soda. But every lunch? A big, warm bowl of white rice.

This morning, I decided to do a little experiment. I weighed my usual lunch portion of cooked white rice (about 250g). Then, I looked up the science.

Here is the breakdown:
250g of cooked white rice (my usual bowl) 🍚

Equals roughly 65g of net carbohydrates.

Your body breaks down carbs into sugar (glucose).

To get the same sugar spike from pure table sugar, I would need to eat about 5.5 tablespoons of white sugar — almost 1/3 of a cup! 😱

I wasn't eating "healthy grains." I was eating a bowl of sugar with chopsticks. No wonder I feel sleepy at 3 PM every day! 😴

Why I'm Doing This Challenge 🎯

For the last few months, I've been stuck in a loop:

  1. Wake up tired.
  2. Crave carbs at 11 AM.
  3. Crash after lunch.
  4. Crave dessert at 9 PM.

I've realized that sugar isn't just candy. It's hiding in bread, sauces, fruits, and – yes – even my "innocent" bowl of rice.

My 30-Day Rules 📝

To make this real, I'm setting clear rules for myself:

No added sugar (ketchup, soda, juice, packaged snacks)
No white carbs (white rice, white bread, noodles)
Limited natural sugar (max 1 piece of low-sugar fruit like berries/day)
Drink 3L water daily

❌ No "but it's a special occasion" excuses

Day 1: The Struggles Are Real 🥲

  • 8:00 AM: Breakfast was 2 scrambled eggs and half an avocado. I feel... okay. But my brain keeps asking for toast.
  • 12:30 PM: Lunch was a salad with grilled chicken and olive oil. No rice. It feels weird eating without a "main carb."
  • 3:00 PM (Right now): This is the hardest hour. I would normally reach for a cookie. Instead, I'm drinking unsweetened green tea. Honestly? A bit miserable. But I'm committed.

A Question for You 💬

I know a lot of you have done low-carb or sugar-free challenges before. How did you survive Week 1? Did the sugar cravings ever go away? And what did you eat instead of rice?

Day 2 Preview: I'll be reading food labels at the supermarket. Spoiler: I'm scared of what I'll find.
