BAD MOUTH ODOR (BAD BREATH): CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS
WHAT CAUSES IT?
Poor Oral Hygiene: As is well known, failing to maintain daily oral hygiene allows food particles left behind between teeth and on the tongue to breed bacteria after a short time, resulting in bad breath.
Gum and Dental Diseases: These occur when teeth and gums are damaged by chemicals released from bacteria. The chemicals secreted by these bacteria create cavities in the teeth and gums. If left untreated, they continue to cause harm and cannot be resolved through cleaning alone.
Dry Mouth: Saliva produced in our mouth plays a major role in maintaining fresh breath. It does this by neutralizing acids produced by bacteria and washing away dead cells from the mouth. Dry mouth can be caused by various factors, such as side effects of medications taken for other illnesses (antihistamines, diuretics, and others), breathing through the mouth instead of the nose for extended periods, salivary gland diseases, and more.
Internal Body Diseases: Conditions such as respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis), sinus infections (sinusitis), tonsillitis, and others.
Smoking Tobacco.
WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?
The first step is knowing how to properly clean our teeth:
Brush Daily: We should clean our teeth with toothpaste at least once a day. Cleaning them at night rather than just in the morning is ideal, ensuring that food eaten during the day does not stay in the mouth overnight.
Use Dental Floss: Since the toothbrushes we commonly use clean only the outer surfaces of the teeth and do not reach between them, we should use dental floss or thin thread held with both hands to remove food particles from between the teeth.
Clean the Tongue: We must not forget to clean our tongue as well.
Replace Toothbrushes: We should replace our toothbrush at least once every two months.
Chew Sugar-Free Gum: Chew sugar-free gum to keep the mouth from drying out.
Consult a Doctor for Medication Side Effects: If the issue is caused by the side effects of medications prescribed for another illness, stopping the medication without first consulting the healthcare professional who prescribed it is entirely wrong.
Visit a Healthcare Facility: If none of these measures resolve the issue, it is best to visit a clinic or hospital for an examination.
THANK YOU.
Live with Hope!
