Best Sexual Positions During Pregnancy: What You Need to Know
Sexual intercourse during pregnancy is generally safe, healthy, and completely fine—provided the expectant mother is comfortable, it is her desire, and none of the following risk factors are present:
Warning Signs & When to Avoid Sex:
Recurrent Miscarriage: A past history of recurrent miscarriages.
PPROM: Premature rupture of membranes (water breaking) before 37 weeks, or a history of it.
High Risk of Preterm Labor: Unexplained mild abdominal pain resembling contractions, or any conditions predisposing to premature labor.
Vaginal Bleeding: Any amount of bleeding from the vagina at any time during pregnancy.
Consult Your Healthcare Provider First: This information does not replace professional medical advice. Always discuss with your doctor during your ANC (Antenatal Care) visits, especially if they use an ultrasound to monitor conditions like placenta previa or a low-lying placenta.
Which Positions Should You Use?
Regarding the best positions, any position is fine as long as it is comfortable for the expectant mother.
However, between 4 to 6 months of pregnancy, lying flat on your back (supine position) is discouraged because the growing uterus can compress major blood vessels in the abdomen. Therefore, during this period, alternative positions such as "doggy style" (from behind) or side-lying positions are the most comfortable and recommended choices.
