Alpaca-Llama Hiking Trail - Hohe Wand, Austria

Despite the freaking cold of -2 °C yesterday and a strong wind, we arrived at the llamas' and alpacas' enclosure, excited for our adventure. The plan was to hike with these charming animals in Hohe Wand Nature Park in Lower Austria, a picturesque destination about 67 km from Vienna, renowned for its stunning mountain views. The park boasts a natural landscape and plenty of leisure activities, attracting both locals and tourists.

Our group consisted of about 12 members accompanied by 3 llamas and 4 alpacas and the organizer´s two dogs. These animals were incredibly tame and amusing, though some had a stubborn streak, refusing to budge at times. I had the pleasure of leading Klara, a spirited llama with a mind of her own. Whenever she spotted grass, she insisted on veering off the path and dragging me uphill.

We reached a small cabin at the end of the trekking area and we paused to enjoy some snacks, including a delightful hot punch drink that was offered with or without alcohol, perfect for warming us up. Going back the path we saw wild goats and deers in an enclosure. We then fed the animals before bringing them back to their shelters.

Adding to the fun were Luis and Lola, two well-behaved dogs owned by our organizer, Dominik. They behaved wonderfully throughout the hike but couldn’t contain their excitement when we passed the rabbits' fenced enclosure on the way back to the marketplace after returning the animals to their quarters.

The entire hiking trail was an incredible experience, and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to be part of it!
