Yes, she was otherwise she would never be able to differentiate between Elinor and Marianne.
I preferred reading "Pride and Prejudice". But in any case, "Sense and Sensibility" was also an important work. She wasn't yet 20 when she wrote both, was she...? Impressive, anyway. And for me absolutely modern, not at all typical of her time.
