Nació en Christianía, Noruega, el 20 de octubre de 1847. Estudió arte en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Copenhague,entre los años 1870 y 1872. Luego, entre los años 1873 y 1875, se trasladó a la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Baden en Karlsruhe.

Perteneció al movimiento impresionismo. Sus temas favoritos fueron el mar y la vida de los pescadores.

En el año 1880 regresó a Noruega y se convirtió en una de las figuras destacadas del movimiento artístico de la del país.

En el año 1892 se fue a vivir a Francia y allí estuvo hasta el año 1906.

Contrajo nupcias en dos ocasiones; en la primera con Ingeborg Charlotte y en la segunda con Alexandra Lasson.

Falleció el 5 de noviembre de 1906 a los 59 años de edad en Volendam (Países Bajos).

He was born in Christiania, Norway, on October 20, 1847. He studied art at the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts between 1870 and 1872. Then, between 1873 and 1875, he moved to the Baden School of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe.

He belonged to the Impressionist movement. His favorite subjects were the sea and the lives of fishermen.

In 1880, he returned to Norway and became one of the leading figures of the country's artistic movement.

In 1892, he moved to France, where he lived until 1906.

He married twice; first to Ingeborg Charlotte and then to Alexandra Lasson.

He died on November 5, 1906, at the age of 59 in Volendam, Netherlands.
