Have you ever worked hard for an exam only to have forgotten most of the course material a few days later? Or have you ever read an interesting book but have difficulty remembering the central ideas? I‘m sure you can think of many examples. When it comes to memory, many people have what they would describe as a “bad memory”, but more often than not, your memory just needs a little help.

Neuroscience tells us that our brains are capable of learning and rewiring themselves at any age. This is called neuroplasticity. The more you engage in successful learning behaviors, the stronger those neural pathways become in your brain. You can work smarter, not harder.

Understanding Why We Forget
Forgetting is a natural function of the brain. When data is not revisited or applied, the brain simply weakens the memory in order to accommodate new encounters. Which is the reason why reading notes over again usually doesn‘t work.

The sweet part is that, as a result of research, there are certain ways of learning that facilitate the transfer of information from short term to long term memory.

  1. Engage in Active Recall
One of the most effective learning techniques is active recall. Instead of reading your notes over and over again, close the book and see if you can recall the information.

After reading a section, challenge yourself with questions like:
Summary article: What were the most important points?

  • Am I able to rephrase this explanation in my own words?

  • What are the answers to the following questions?

Retrieving knowledge, or asking your brain to remember something.

  1. Embrace Spaced Repetition
Some students cram at the last minute, cramming every detail into the one all-night study session that is taken before an exam. It‘s a good way to remember information for a short time, but then it is forgotten.

Spaced repetition means to study the topic repeatedly after increasing time-up steps. For example, after one day, after three days, after one week, and after one month. Every time you study the topic it helps you remember it for a longer period of time.

  1. Teach What You Learn
The simplest solution? Teach it to someone. By explaining what you‘ve learned to a friend, roommate, or even your grandma, you‘ll get a sense of how well you‘ve grasped the topic.

No one to teach? As if you had a whole class. It will improve your memory and confidence.

  1. Break Information into Smaller Parts
The brain is better at remembering well-structured information than massive chunks of text.

Break each chapter into smaller sections. Do not try to learn a whole chapter. Focus on one idea at a time. This method is called chunking. Chunking breaks your material down and minimizes the burden on your mind.

  1. Prioritize Sleep
Sleep allows us to learn. While sleeping the brain consolidates and encodes the information received during the day.

Students who consistently get seven to nine hours sleep will achieve more than those studying late into the night as our brain is a more alert, creative and accurate in recalling information.

  1. Stay Active
Exercise also has effects on the brain. It increases the blood flow to the brain as well as contributes to the development of new brain cells.

Just 10 minutes a day to walk, stretch or do some light exercise can do wonders for your concentration, help relieve stress and boost your memory.

  1. Minimize Distractions
Learning becomes difficult, when all the time you spend trying to learn is broken up by incoming emails, Facebook, overhearing conversations.

Make a quiet environment to study, turn off the unneeded alerts and focus on a task at one time. Deep focus helps your brain to understand information more.

  1. Apply and Review Your Knowledge
  2. Practice what you learn – Knowledge is not very useful when not applied. Write summaries, work on problems, make mindmaps or practice applying this knowledge in real life, in whatever way works best for you.

The more you put it into action the better your memory becomes.

An Islamic Perspective on Knowledge Seeking
Islam is a faith that encourages the pursuit and acquisition of knowledge. The Qur‘an encourages man to observe, think and reason. ‘He’ (prophet Muhammad S.A.A.W.) said: ‘The pursuit of knowledge is a duty for every Muslim’.

Therefore, only when scientific learning and good faith, discipline and right conduct are summed up, then students will be developed intellectually as well as spiritually. The knowledge can be truly appreciated if it is beneficial for the individual as well as the society.

In Conclusion
Improving your memory has nothing to do with some innate talent you have, but everything with creating good learning habits. The techniques described below, such as active recall, spaced repetition, teaching others, note chunking, sleeping, doing physical exercise and eliminating distractions are scientifically proven to improve your ability to learn.

Keep this in mind. Learning at deep levels takes time and only repeated practice over a period of time will result in long-term change. Even little steps forward on a regular basis can make a big difference in the end.

No matter if you‘re a student, a worker, or a life long learner, just investing in your memory is one of the greatest investment you can have. Study purposefully, practice day in and day out, and be led by knowledge and wisdom on your road to ever last success.
