Science takes fear out because of understanding
One thing I really like about science is that it's different from religion. It's not about faith and belief, it's about understanding why something operates the way it does and what it does.
We have fear for things we mostly don't understand and they may look like a threat when really it's our own ignorance that is the problem.
Fear can actually be a liar and I'm not talking about those motivational quotes about fear. In a literal sense, fear focuses on the unproven and untestable. What we fear is nothing more than a story untested and unproven yet.
Marie Curie a famous woman in science said and I'm not directly quoting, she made me understand that nothing in life is to be feared, only understood. She had great reasons to practice what she preached. She worked in a radioactive laboratory. She had to deal with the consequences of her profession, the early engulfment of cancer to replace fear with a more beneficial emotion which is understanding.
This really is a huge gap in the code of fear. There is a great deal of unexplored work that has to be done in our own battle against fear. Most of the work is not technical. Most of it is confidence in knowing what's true.
Most of it is about confronting the unknown and the unproven story. Something religion doesn't like at all.
The biggest fear stems from the lack of understanding the known vs the unknown. In this absence of information, the mind gravitates toward the most negative outcomes because it's in our nature to be more pessimistic than optimistic. You may see it as bad but it's necessary for survival that we think the worst.
You may think you need to be braver, but that's actually not the case. Being brave isn't the answer because bravery is just a form of understanding from the outside.
If you really want to overcome the fear, you need to step closer to the thing and really understand it. If that thing is dangerous you take precautions while you study it.
This could be the actual cost of it, the odds of achieving it or the odds of it being a success. Once you do this you will start to lose fear, but not because you're a different person, you've stopped being ignorant about the thing you were previously afraid of.
I am trying my best to be a person who seeks understanding more than information.
