What is happening with Pluto?

It turns out that the director of NASA, Jared Isaacman, affirms that he is going to fight for Pluto, he has said verbatim that "he is totally in favor of Pluto becoming a planet again", it is not his personal opinion, he has instructed NASA to prepare, in fact he has said that NASA itself is currently preparing some documents on a position that we would love to promote within the scientific community to resume and open this debate, on whether Pluto should be a planet again, because it was, not for a century but for It was for quite a few years, from 1930 to 2006.

This statement was made by Isaacman, furthermore, not anywhere, not on one of these nightly television programs or on the street. No, he did it during a hearing in the United States Senate and the things that are said there have to be taken very seriously, that is, if he has said that they are going to do that, it means that they are doing it and that they are going to want to do it.

He said this on April 28, 2026 and insisted that he is very much in favor of Pluto becoming a planet again. Pluto was discovered on February 18, 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh and why should Pluto become a planet again? And there are also two questions. Why was Pluto demoted to a dwarf planet, creating a special category? Because this category of dwarf planet did not exist before, the International Astronomical Union invented a category called Dwarf Planet.

According to NASA, Pluto should be a planet because it is a world with a geologically active surface, it has glaciers, mountains, a tenuous atmosphere, but capable of generating fog and a complex moon system, it has a giant moon, Charon, in fact it is considered a double dwarf planet system, before it was a double planet, now it is a double dwarf planet.

The heart itself is believed to be a surface that at one time was in a fluid or semi-liquid state, depending on the trajectory and the heat that Pluto would have received. It is known that a world is geologically dead due to the number of craters it has on the surface, but Pluto, as you can see, there are areas with craters, there are areas with mountains and the heart is very smooth and this tells us that this area is very young geologically, either due to freezing, due to the flow of material that was fluid at the time, I'm not saying liquid, it could have been ice or snow that had spread at times where Pluto, the temperature of Pluto would have been different from the current one.

According to NASA, all of this makes Pluto a dynamic world. In fact, it is also known that on Pluto there are cryovolcanoes, that is, volcanoes that expel ice and that inside there could be layers of liquid water under the surface of Pluto, not a global ocean, but some layers of heated liquid water, not so much by the internal heat of Pluto, because it is small, it will have some internal heat, but not much. But perhaps the gravitational interaction with Charon produces some heat and they have calculated that there may be some liquid water under the surface of Pluto.

It is a dynamic world, it is not a dead world, those are the arguments that NASA considers in its documents to reopen the debate, to turn Pluto into a planet again.

What does the International Astronomical Union say that why Pluto is not a Planet? Well, in 2006 they decided to change the definition of a planet, a planet would have to be that object that orbits around the Sun or if it is a planet around another star, firstly, secondly, it should have enough mass for its gravity to overcome the forces of a rigid body, which means that it should reach a rounded, spherical or almost spherical shape, here you will tell me, "Well, the Earth is not spherical, it is a geoid" is that none of them are spherical, the Sun is not a perfect sphere, nor Jupiter, no planet is a perfect sphere, but the differences, for example, the Earth are extremely minimal, so you can talk about what a sphere is, in fact, it would be so if we were so precise, we should not even call soccer balls spherical, because they are not perfectly spherical, they have some small imperfection.

A planet, according to the International Astronomical Union, should have a more or less spherical shape, they have one out there that is shaped like a Rubik's ball, but well, these are things from the International Astronomical Union that has declared it to be a Nano planet, but well, third point and that is where Pluto fails, the orbital domain, it must have cleared its environment or orbital neighborhood, which means that it is the dominant object and has absorbed or expelled other bodies of significant size in its orbit.

All the planets have some object more or less in their orbit, maybe not Mercury, but in general yes, for example, Jupiter has the Trojans, it has millions, I think they estimate that they have a million Trojans in front and a million Trojans behind, which are asteroids. when I say million, they are those more than 1 km in diameter, but, even so, if all the masses of all the Jupiter Trojans were put together, it would be a significant amount compared to Jupiter, that is the point, that is what it means to be the dominant object, the problem is that Pluto is not the dominant object in its orbit and that is where it fails.

But Isaacman, NASA and other scientists consider that definition to be too restrictive, in short, NASA does not want to impose that Pluto is a planet, in fact, well, in fact, it cannot, that defines it, it decides it. the International Astronomical Union, but But here we enter into a rather big problem of planetary size, we enter into the basic problem, why astronomers, the International Astronomical Union, changed the definition of a planet in 2006.

My personal opinion, they panicked, they panicked because spherical worlds similar to Pluto were beginning to appear and if Pluto was a planet, those others should also be, currently dwarf planets are apart from Pluto, Ceres which are in the asteroid belt, Makemake, Eris and haumea, which by the way was discovered by the Spanish, but there is also a controversy about who discovered it or whether it was a group from the United States. I wish there was public pressure in Spain to claim the discovery of haumea clearly for Spanish scientists.

Because Pluto was discovered by an American and for many years it was classified as a planet. But of course, if Pluto manages to become a planet again, Maquemaa, Eris, haumea and Ceres should also be planets. And in the coming years we could discover dozens of worlds like Pluto and I'm falling short.
