When a star dies.

When a star dies.

This is a research that analyzes what happens when a star ages and approaches the moment of death, according to this research, for any planet that orbited it and had developed life forms for billions of years, it is literally the apocalypse, although it is an apocalypse in slow motion.

The research that I am going to tell you about, which is also in the news now, although it came out at the end of 2025, was led by astronomers from University College London and the University of Warkwich and shows that dying stars devour their nearby planets, including gas giants, they also eat them, this happens when the star expands and becomes a red giant.

This is not new, previous research shows this panorama and in fact the animation I posted was created by the European Space Agency and it comes to illustrate what the end of the Earth would be like, although I already told you that it would be more in slow motion, a process of millions of years, but according to most experts, including the European Space Agency, the Earth would not be saved and would end up being devoured by the Sun.

There are some researchers who say that, in this process of expansion, the Sun can lose mass and when the Sun loses mass, the Sun also loses its capacity for gravitational attraction and then the Earth could move further away from the Sun and with one thing and another, perhaps it barely escapes, the point is that it is the same, life on Earth would end much sooner and this research, in addition, comes to confirm and also clarify this entire bleak panorama, since this research has gone further than any other.

He has analyzed the process in detail and for this the researchers analyzed almost 500,000 stars that have left the main sequence, the main sequence is the stage of a star's life during which it is dedicated to fusing hydrogen creating Helium, it is the typical stage of the star, it is where the star is the longest and it is where our sun is located.

These 500,000 stars studied in the research would have left that stage, they would already be elderly that enter the final phase of their lives and begin to use helium and begin to produce other heavier materials. The researchers, using data from NASA's TEST satellite, detected 130 giant planets and discovered that those planets close to those dying stars are much rarer around advanced red giant stars, that is, those that are closer to death.

This indicates that many planets were already swallowed or destroyed in the expansion process and those planets were gas giants, but there would be everything. What happened to the small rocky planets like Earth that would orbit those stars? Now they will be clouds of plasma dispersed throughout the outer layers of the star, however, for the life forms that could have emerged on those planets, the fate may be different.

There are two curious options, if these beings had developed technology, they would know what was happening long before, long before the star leaves the main sequence, in fact, long before they would see that their world was warming up and dying, for example, the gradual increase in the brightness of our sun will make the Earth uninhabitable due to high temperatures in about 1000 million years, approximately 100 million years up or 100 million years down.

And that will be long before the Sun leaves the main sequence in 5 billion years and long before it becomes a red giant, by that time, by the time it becomes a red giant, the Earth will already be a dead planet due to the high temperatures of the Sun.

What options would humans have in that distant future? They could build a shield-shaped megastructure that reduces the amount of energy that comes from the sun or gradually evacuate it towards Mars and the moons of Jupiter. In the cosmos, a similar phenomenon could occur that we can call migration of life or survival of life, we would have to give it a name; and there is no need for a civilization with spaceships to exist.

Imagine that life arises on a warm planet, near a young star within the habitable area of that star, the star is emitting more and more heat, it is a slow process of millions of years, hundreds of millions of years, but in this process, the habitable area is expanding outwards while the interior area is going to be cut because it is getting hotter and hotter.

The planet that was in the favorable zone of the habitable area is receiving more and more heat and is dying little by little, but the impact of asteroids causes rocks inside which there are bacteria to come out into space. These rocks reach planets further away from the star, planets that were initially outside the habitable area, which were very cold, but with a brighter star they now have a pleasant temperature.

The life that arrives on these asteroids settles in these new worlds, prospers, develops, but the star continues to increase its brightness. New impacts and new rocks loaded with bacteria go out into space and colonize more distant worlds or moons. that each time they now enter the habitable area, that process can continue until the life forms reach the most distant worlds of their system.

The question is, and further afield, do you think life could make the jump to other young stars to start the cycle?
