The autonomous taxi of the future

Zoox took a completely different path.

Most companies developing autonomous driving technology use conventional cars retrofitted with sensors, cameras, and computers; even when operating autonomously, these vehicles still retain a steering wheel, pedals, and all the controls designed for a human driver.

Its robotaxi was built to be fully autonomous; the vehicle features a symmetrical cabin, can move in any direction without needing to turn around, and was developed without any manual controls. To make this possible, the company had to overcome not only technological challenges but also regulatory ones, as virtually all U.S. safety regulations were written with the assumption that a driver would always be behind the wheel.

After years of testing, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration granted Zoox the authorization needed to launch paid commercial operations. In practice, this means the company is moving beyond experimental programs to offer paid rides using a vehicle that lacks both a steering wheel and pedals.

Commercial services are launching in Las Vegas, where hundreds of thousands of passengers have already participated in the company's demonstration programs. Throughout these trials, Zoox has logged over half a million trips, with a massive waiting list of interested individuals anticipating the service's official opening.

The impact of this authorization extends far beyond Zoox itself.

If the project demonstrates safety and reliability at scale, it could accelerate the updating of traffic laws for fully autonomous vehicles and pave the way for a new generation of urban transport. Instead of retrofitting cars from the last century, manufacturers will be able to develop vehicles designed specifically for artificial intelligence—optimizing interior space, reducing operating costs, and eliminating components that are no longer needed.
