Mulching is necessary to help my ginger Plants do better
To make the best from farming, it requires putting a lot of work. A lot of farmers already know this. Different farming systems come to the mind of farmers but, it depends how knowledgeable they are to apply the farming system. Adopting a particular farming system also depends on the type of plant or crop.
I can't really remember when last I practiced mulching. For this my ginger farming, it becomes necessary for me to adopt mulching for my ginger farming this season. Experience show that mulching improves ginger growth and quality as is been practically shown to me by my ginger farmer friend.
Before embarking on this ginger farming, my friend informed about mulching as one of the farming system required. Precisely, I applied organic mulching method although this is my first ginger farming experience.
I used organic mulching as one of the best ways to improve my ginger farm to achieve a high yield. It is observed that ginger grow well in a loose, moist and fertile soil. So mulching would help me to achieve this good expectation. To form my mulch, I had to make use of dry leaves, grass and plantain Leave to do it.
I planted my ginger earlier before the rains gradually starts. After I planted my ginger rhizomes, I immediately covered it with dry leaves and dry grasses and other compost wastes. Some farmers may choose to wait until the shoots of the ginger begin to develop before applying the mulch. It may take about 3 to 4 weeks before the shoots starts to develop.
I Spread the dry leaves and grasses first on the surface of the ridges I planted the ginger. I then later added the dry plantain leaves to it. With this, more moist would be conserved. Since the rain has really started then, it would prevent excess heat from the sun to penetrate into the soil. And it would also prevent excess water from leaving the soil. I loved the idea of mulching because of it does to plants and the soil.
Reasons Why Mulching is Necessary
Mulching as I have observed, is good and necessary for the following reasons:
- It helps to improve soil fertility
- It prevents weeds from growing as the weed seeds would not be able to attract sunlight
- It adds moist to the soil especially when the rains has not really started
- It controls soil temperature
- Wind or rain would not sweep away the soil when mulched. So it prevents soil erosion
With these reasons for using organic mulching on my ginger plants in course their growing season, I would expect to have a good and fertile soil which would enable me to achieve a healthy, strong and bountiful ginger harvest at the end of the season.
