Main Difference between Plantain and Banana

In many people’s opinion, plantain and banana are nothing more than bananas of different sizes, and as a matter of fact, the two belong to the same family of plants.

But there's a very real difference when it comes to the, genes inside these fruits. It's the genes that determine sugar content and starch in completely different ways for both.

The banana has plenty of sugar content and low amounts of starch. This makes it easy for the fruit to ripe very fast and also soften independently without using fire or any other heat source like what we do in the kitchen when we're trying smto cook the plantain.

  • Boiled plantain and good egg stew is one of my favourite meals by the way.

Plantain has thicker walls and full of tough starch which is not converted to sugar quickly when itbm is hanging on the tree branch. The plant uses that kind of structure to store or keep a good amount of energy in it which helps it survive bad climatic conditions that could destroy it and also the small insects and pests.

Because of that genetic makeup, trying to eat plantain in its raw form is a bad idea because the fruit has way too much starch and it is not that easy for a person to digest the raw cell walls. But the moment you heat it up, things will change totally because starches get softened by heat.
