Ayan lives with his mother and younger sister, Sara, in a small neighborhood. Their life is not luxurious, but they are happy with whatever they have. Ayan works long hours at a small shop because his father passed away several years earlier. His biggest dream is to give Sara a good education and make sure his mother never has to worry about money.
One evening, while returning home from work, Ayan notices an old man sitting outside a closed shop. The man's name is Bashir. He has been trying to sell his old lantern collection, but nobody seems interested. Ayan stops to talk to him and learns that Bashir once owned a successful business, but after losing his wife, he gradually lost interest in everything.
Ayan buys one small lantern from him with the little money he has. Bashir is surprised because Ayan could have spent that money on himself. Before Ayan leaves, Bashir tells him, “Sometimes a small light is enough to show someone the right road.”
A few weeks later, Ayan loses his job unexpectedly. His family begins struggling to pay their expenses, and Sara even considers leaving school. Ayan feels completely defeated, but when he looks at the old lantern hanging in his room, he remembers Bashir's words.
Instead of giving up, Ayan starts repairing and selling old household items. Bashir helps him understand how to run a small business. Slowly, Ayan's work becomes successful. He earns enough to support his family and keep Sara in school.
Years later, Sara becomes a teacher. At her first school ceremony, she sees the same old lantern displayed on a table. Ayan tells her that it was the first thing he ever bought with hope rather than money.
The movie ends with Sara turning on the lantern while Ayan and his mother watch proudly. The light fills the room, symbolizing how one small act of kindness can change an entire life.
Why I Think This Movie Could Receive a Movie Award
I believe The Last Lantern could receive a movie award because its story is simple but emotionally meaningful. It does not depend on expensive action scenes or unrealistic events. Instead, it focuses on family, struggle, kindness, hope, and never giving up. The characters face problems that ordinary people can understand, which makes the story feel realistic and relatable.
The relationship between Ayan and his mother, Sara, and Bashir gives the movie emotional depth. The lantern also works as a strong symbol throughout the story. It represents hope during difficult times and reminds the audience that even a small positive action can make a big difference.
Most importantly, the ending is hopeful without being unrealistic. Ayan does not suddenly become rich or famous. He succeeds because he works hard, learns from others, and refuses to surrender to difficult circumstances. I think this message could connect with audiences of different ages and backgrounds. For these reasons, I believe The Last Lantern has the qualities of an inspiring and award-worthy family drama.
