Build a creative piece inspired by A Broken Clock.

The clock stopped at 10:16
People told her to fix it.

On the wall it hung quietly
Frozen in a moment that Jane could not move past. This was the exact time everything changed- the moment her father’s life split into a before and after.

People urged her to fix the broken clock, time moves on they say but to her the clock was holding something together within her and not just broken. Fixing it felt like erasing all the proof that that moment mattered.

She left it.

At first it was a silent reminder of what she lost but with time things began to slowly shift. At 10:16 everyday Jane would pause and allow herself to feel the pain, loss, and all the emotions she had been avoiding. She let herself relieve the sad and great moments with her dad.

Gradually the pain softened and the broken clock became a reminder of what she had lived, the beautiful memories she had with her dad and not what she lost.

One day her friend asked, why keep this broken clock. She smiled and said, it works but differently.

The clock never ticked or moved but it was right twice daily.

What does the broken clock symbolize in your work?

The broken clock represents a moment frozen in time which has a n emotional significance. It’s the exact point when Jane lost her dad and her life changed.

It represents how people hold unto pains not because they enjoy suffering but because let go makes them feel Like they are letting go of their loved ones or like they are loosing the memories attached to the moment.

With time this changed for jame as it stopped being a reminder of pain and loss but of the great moments she shared with her dad. It’s like celebrating his life rather than mourning his demise.

Is it a story of loss, hope, regret, or second chances?

This is basically a story of loss and healing. Loss is at the center as the clock marked that moment of emotional rupture. But with time healing happened painting the picture that even if we cannot fix what is broken, we can always find a way to live with it. Just like Jane learnt to.

What lesson does your interpretation carry?

The core lesson in my interpretation is that sometimes not everything that is broken needs to be fixed to still
have value.

Healing doesn’t always mean that we would move on quickly, sometime it could be us learning to coexist with what hurts us.

We should know that those moments that stopped us emotionally can still shape us in meaningful ways. And lastly we should know that even if something no longer functions the way it should (like the clock), it can still hold purpose and comfort.

Reflection
We don’t have to erase pain to grow, we can reshape it into something that will serve us.

Sort:

I might offer another explanation: that this makes us more resilient in moments of heartbreak and pain.
